Or a low pop series. That only has one split. Ie the radical series. I was racing against division 1-8 racers when competing in that. It split very very rare. So most the time you had a 20 man grid of very different skill levels. It was still great fun.

Rookie races run every hour, you have to register for each race. There's a five minute warm up before every race and you have to join the server within this time. There are also separate qualifying and practice sessions run at different times, plus you can test any car and track combination you own on a test server. There are also privately hosted sessions, some are open and others are pass worded.
The higher licence series run every two hours but tend to last longer than rookie races which are around 20-25 minutes long, plus the 5 minute warm up.

Yep like everyone here has said theres more to Iracing then just winning a race. Last season I was in the Mustang cup and trying to win my division this is what keeps me coming back. My Irating is around 1900 mark, whilst its not high I do tend to find myself in the higher split and never get a win but I do get a lot of top 5 results.
Will never be a fast guy no matter how much I practise but Ive had some great midfield battles over the last few years.
Add a bunch of people from here. I have great fun just running laps with friends. Its actually amazing fun. Used to run the radical most night with guys from here. Ill never forget when mine and anotehr guys friend on here was competeing in the radical race our old friend never gets higher than 10th. One race a lot of the front and mid runner had trouble in one form or another.
Pete had just drove his own steady race and had come out with about 10 laps to go in 3rd. Every single one of us sat in the pits cheering him on for a good 20 minutes. All going mad over the comms as he came up the main straight. I'd say that 3rd for Pete meant so much. More than some shallow win would ever mean. That day he worked dam hard for his 3rd. 45 minutes holding it on the road when people a hell of a lot faster than him, ran out of talent.

It is no where near as bad as online leagues that I used to race in. Took me 180 races and 3 years to win my first race on race2play (I was a complete newbie when I started).
Took me perhaps 6 in iracing.
As others have said you do get split into your skill level race which makes a fairer and more interesting.
Winning a top split is a pretty good feeling as I normally come in about 5th if I haven't wrecked
And if the car doesn't need a lot of setup.I'm going to skip this week Barmy, Bathurst sucks.

Well I'm 6-7 seconds off the top times at the moment, normally I'm 2.5 - 4 seconds off.

Going to try and race all the tracks this season, no point buying tracks and then not running them. I find that tracks I don't like will grow on me if I practice on them enough. I waat much of a fan of Road Atlanta until the new GT3 series sort of forced or on me, because I definitely wanted to race.

think I might give this another whirl.... tried it about 8-10 months ago maybe? had a couple free laps just driving but I can;t remember whether I was just bored, confused or whether something was being funky with it but I just gave up and stuck with grid2....LOL which is a serious hoot..... if you like playing with people who's sole intention is to win and make you **** up any way they can!!!
the amount of times in a touge or duel and they other drivers would try and ram you off the track like **** heads! touge was the worst as if they had a faster car they'd just pull out infront a bit, wait till you were closing the gap then slam on and turn so you have to hit them.... usually disqualifying you. dunno well the VOIP works on it but game would have been bumped to 18+ with the filth I would be spilling out. This made me realise that it was more about the fun of a clean race then just out right winning for me
(seen the light maybe?) was one epic touge where I was behind for so long and then in the last like 2 mins of racing I stole pole then he did, then I did again... but then I bottled it and went flying off a cliff and he won. was epic though racing so close Also I saw my Dutch friend streaming some stock car oval racing, now it looks like not much is going on but I could really feel the pressure being conveyed when there would be a pack of cars 3 thick all going around a tight bend with the voice over stating (stay high) and then seeing the external cam and there's a car literally right there xD (grid two would have been in a pile up by now) so think I'm gunna give it a go again, shall have a little read back to try and get myself sorted on this again.

oh yea, have a Thrustmaster Ferrari GT experience.... pretty bog standard entry level wheel but was a steal for £19. might look into a second hand better wheel if I stick this out a bit
am a bit worried about the deadzone though as to make minor movement I have to move the wheel a bit more than I'd like and usually ends up with a tiny bit of oversteering as I only wanted to a little bitbloomin heck.... wall of text xD

This is what I meant when I said iRacing starts paying for itself. You could buy all the content you want/need so all that is needed to pay is the subscription. Earn back $40 a year participating + $5 year bonus + a single referral @ $10 then buy the year subscription on black Friday for $49 and you wouldn't be paying anything.
I also got a promotion email giving me $75 for $50 or something over Christmas which is the bulk of my credit. I still have content to get and when Monza and Imola are released later this year, my credits will be paying for that.

Just done a bit of practice at Bathurst, didn't bother doing much though, I really need a PC upgrade, fps is dropping into the mid-40's coming out of the pits and a few other places, maxing out around 60 at best, really not enough to race with and I really don't fancy dropping down to a single monitor
Quite like the track though, would need a whole heap of practice to even contemplate racing there though, so many blind corners and even tapping the wall seemed to destroy the car...

thanks again for the comment. ahhhh I get you... that's pretty cool that you can do that! should always be some way to pay for a subbed game by playing the game (like EvE and buying/selling the plexs or what ever).
guessing a lot of people play with 3 monitors in some surround setup? not a bad shout as I'm guessing they are the driver and front passenger window views so you can see of the side? very hand for not cutting into people I can imagine, kinda worried that I don;t have 3 I'll be at a serious disadvantage and more likely to clip things/people/stuff

Yeah allows you to run a much wider field of view, don't get quite the whole side windows in and that's purely peripheral vision but it does add to immersion quite a lot.
It's not really a disadvantage having just 1, I would suggest using the 'virtual mirror' rather than proper ones to get an unrealistic fov in the mirror (I still do that with 3 screens), and make sure the spotter is turned on and you listen to him.
There is a minor advantage is close racing, most notable in oval racing as you're often right next to another guy, but with the mirror/spotter it's close enough that it won't make any real difference. Just the immersion, which is the bit I miss, tried playing a bit over christmas on my work laptop and whilst framerate was fine I just didn't enjoy it as much.

How does the MX-5 drive now that the tyre model has been updated? Is it a massive difference? I think last time I tried it was the previous version, though admittedly I'm not 100% sure.

heh, maybe, but generally although bigger screens are nicer the fov doesn't differ much between single screen setups

Getting into the low 2:06's now at Bathurst, maybe I've got another second in me, but keeping away from the walls at the top of the hill is proving trickier than getting faster.
It's a very rewarding track when you string a decent lap together. Just got to manage to run a race distance comfortably and without touching the walls at all and then I'll give a real race a go.
