iRacing

You're welcome Matt, I think that will be a good course for the MX-5, lots of places to pass and if someone is slightly off the pace a great place to catch them is on the oval, with lots of room to pass.

I settled down to do the 10:45 RUF cup race on Charlotte road course last night, my last before the track changed, and it was going really well. I started on Poll, great start and leading for the first few laps with only one real contender, I was faster round the course but on the oval he could hold slightly higher speed than me. By lap 10 lead had changed places and coming onto the oval he made a small mistake and I hit it much faster than him, were were side by side all the way around and I managed to out brake him on T1, holding the lead for the next lap pushing the gap a little further till coming down the main straight, I brake for T1, turn in and SMACK! My race is over.

Checking back on the replay, the guy in 2nd didn't brake and turned so as to strike me, destroying my nearside rear wheel and ending my race a little under half way, giving me a 4x for the pleasure. I was fuming and all he could say was he forgot to brake. A B licence racer, who was fast in a close race with me up to this point... It's the first time I've filed a protest sadly but it just seemed too deliberate to me.

To console myself, here are a couple of screens of the latest paint I'm using for the season in the RUF cup. I didn't make it but I have a few changes planned to personalise it a bit more. (I have permission from the maker)

awsome buddy cant wait to get in the ruf..

i have just purchased the skip barba and new hampshire that really is something else and hard with the lack of feedback... i want to get the jetta for the grand touring cup along with donington however not sure if i need to purchase the mustang aswell to tack part even though i have no intent in division it

As long as you have the car & track you're driving, you can race. You dont need all the cars to enter it.

@Muska
I suspect theres a few people out there with a similar attitude. For a 4x they'll ruin your race, get a win on their record and finish ahead of you gaining some extra iR for it.

As far as im concerned, if you make the mistake, the very least you can do is stop and wait for them, and let the race continue. It makes no difference in your case as you werent able to continue, but you dont just drive off as if nothing happened.
If someone brakes too soon, and you hit them, i'd call that 50/50, might be the following drivers responsibility to avoid them, but if they brake at the wrong point (not the same place they've been braking lap after lap) then you can only react to that.
'Forgot to brake' is a joke.

The thing is, there are some terrible drivers in A license, the system cant identify intent or blame, it just punishes everyone. For every love-tap, you might as well punt, and i get a feeling there are drivers who are well aware that if they make a stupid move, they know they're more than likely going to survive, because they'll be stopped my the car they hit, the other guy is going to be pushed off the racing line and probably sent into a wall.

It's disappointing people might choose to behave that way, I guess it's the reality when there is no financial loss.

The result is in from my appeal, they're very efficient and unfortunately decided it was not deliberate but he gets a talking to and it's noted on his record for the future and that's all I expected to get to be honest.

Yeah, i dont think they'd ever adjust a result, you just have to hope that their actions are being tracked and bad drivers will be dealt with, and not tolerated if its a regular thing.

I managed to dive into the 7pm GT3 70min race at Road America with a couple of minutes to spare, top split of 40. Hadnt bothered qualifying so started 17th, the rolling start was a bit sluggish, probably a tad too bunched up so took a moment before we could do anything more than tentative acceleration :D
Managed to get a few places in the first lap, a mixture of positioning, caution on corners i knew were slide hazards in the first lap, and taking advantage of people being overly cautious.

Lap 2 had someone all over me, who followed my defensive line into T3 and decided to stay there and go bump bump bump before pulling out and braking. Held the position, but proper idiotic.
Next lap, were side by side from T1 to the straight heading to T3, he's got a tiny overlap on my RL wheel, but ive got the slipstream and pull clear. We get to the braking zone, he goes flying past me and hits the car in front, who was at the 100 yard marker when we were at the 200 marker.

30sec later, and im being accused of being 'a really unfair driver'!
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20670693/iRacing/really_unfair_driver.zip
He'd hit 2 people in 2 1/4 laps! The first he just seemed to let the car roll into the other at the apex, same corner too.

That got me wound up, but managed to carry on and ignore it. Him punting the guy ahead put me to 12th from 17th, and i managed to work my way past a couple of people. Lap 6 i was letting someone through at T3 and somehow got the balance under braking wrong and the car slide out, and i got a love-tap from the car following, wasnt their fault, and while i was facing the wrong way i could see i had a 5sec gap to swing the car round and carry on, rather than probably be facing the barrier if he hadnt nudged me.
That put me back to P17 again :(

Spent a the rest of the race clawing my way through, pitted on L20 which was a tad later than i'd planned but the car was fine. Put a bit extra fuel in, and off we go.
I had to go past everyone i'd already passed since spinning, and didnt really have any difficulty with any of them, most of them i was getting on the 2nd back-straight, i have wicked speed entering it and can jump them whichever side they choose to defend.
Had one guy leave room on the right, who closed that off as the corner kinked left, so i'd quickly pulled across and took the racing line, the outside line for the corner, he almost pushed me off the track in trying to block that line, braked a little later (fresh rubber FTW) and went around him LIKE A BOSS! :D

I get the '5 laps fuel' msg, look at the clock and realise im not going to make this, so i started short-shifting. A few laps later it seemed fine. Then lap 34 im pulling out of the final corner and waiting for the white flag... i can see the flag guy but he's just chillin. Oh F%^&!
1.5 laps of fuel, engine map to 3 and major coasting.
Get the white flag, still looking short, map 6 and its panic stations!

By the final corner, my 12sec lead was about 2sec, and im spluttering. Fortunately managed to get up the hill and then roll over the line
I hadnt expected 37 laps, and if i'd rechecked the time remaining, i'd have known it wasnt fine, i was only comfortable for 36 laps. :(
Was 6th, had to settle for 8th with the finish line almost in sight.

Good fun though, pretty sure i could have placed 5th though if i had the extra drop of fuel.

another good night for myself on iracing now up to d licence 3.53... irating is 1105 and tt 1350...

was racing the jetta.. although not a very thrilling drive very fun class with some close racing round donington

I signed up for this for a month last night. I've bought a G27 and been playing Assetto Corsa which is amazing, but this seems more like a finished product. Currently just blatting around Lime... Rock (?) in the MX-5 trying to race smooth and safe. Loving the 'feel' of the cars and the sound of them.

Got the itch to race again and tried out rFactor, but I can't get my DFGT to feel as good as it did in iRacing! :( Might need to make a return!

Race by Matt Stanton, on Flickr

Having a very tough time on Road Atlanta this week, can't seem to get a good race going without stupid errors and a spin. In the shot above though I was side by side with that guy for nearly half the track, very intense!

One more crap race and I'll be under 3.0, in B licence so I'll probably take it a lot easier and go for the safe approach.

Isnt it typical that iRacing do discounted credit when you've no real need for them at the time!
They did it before i started up, but was building my Obutto setup and hadnt tried iRacing in about 3yr, and now they've done it after i've bought all the content im likely to need.

I guess theres a couple i havent bought yet, and theres Monza and BTCC cars in the pipeline too, and im tempted to try the Indycar even though i think its probably a little faster than i'd prefer to be going. Eitherway, $100 credit wont go all that far, and with 20% off for 6+ items, you can get about $120 worth of items for $75 (less with participation credits) its a decent saving, which you'd end up spending eventually anyway.

Just had a decent GT3 race, started 10th and as i'd got up to 6th the leader, who was 7sec clear of the pack, made a mistake and rejoined just behind the 4 followers who were tightly packed. Moved to 5th that lap, and caught up the leading 5. I managed to take 4th (ex-leader had just passed him too) and then coming out of T2 i think 2nd & 3rd were fighting for the place and must have to brake after the exit, cos i was just about able to blow past the pair of them before they could try and jam their car in the way.
The following lap i was right behind the leader, we had a few sec clear while the 3 behind squabbled, he got a little sideways in T1, and was able to go inside him, but he had my slipstream down the straight, i held the inside, he went outside, gave him plenty of room but he gassed a little too aggressively and it turned him into me, sending me right and into the grass facing the wrong way. That was L12 (of 38) and so its do-able for a pitstop, and at the last moment i decided to dive in and just get an assessment of the damage, run clean air (felt they were slowing me down tbh, which happens when your all fighting for places) it was optional repairs, and for some reason i let it repair 10sec and then figured screw it, maybe it was fine, so left it with 22sec unrepaired and carried on.

Got up to 3rd, but with about 15 laps to go i could feel my tyres falling off, everyone else would have pitted around L18-20, so the 6sec lead i had was going to come down. Ended up losing it 3 laps from the end, but followed him to 4th.

Didnt put a foot wrong all race, just got hit by 2 drivers, the one when i was momentarilly leading apologised, which is a rarity! the other, lap 2 maybe, was around the outside of T3, and he just barged me off and drove off!

+57 (2357 SoF) and -0.01 for being punted off twice!
Tempted to do the 5am race too :D

edit: Looks like i am :D

VICTORY IS MIIINE! :D

What a mental race that was.
12th on the grid, P5 within half a lap (only 2 were 'offs'), P3 on lap 3, and 2nd on lap 4. Its all so simple... except i'd pull away from 3rd and make a silly mistake.
Got a 4x on lap 5, when a bitching backmarker decided he wasnt bothered about anyone elses race and just drove his beaten up Z4 through the sector before the final corner. Ended up having to dive down the inside, engine bogged, dropped a gear and it kicked out and the guy i'd had to force a pass, decided he was going to do the over-under, so when it kicked out, it sent him flying into the wall. I'd be lying if i claimed i felt anything other than he deserved it tbh.

L11 i let 3rd by, he'd gone wide on L1 so it wasnt going to be a battle i'd win, so i gifted it him and drove my own race. Within a few laps 1st-3rd was about 4sec apart, L15 2nd caught the dirt outside of T2 and took a heavy hit, although didnt seem to harm his pace (75mph 45 degree hit, lifting his car off the ground!). I didnt know he'd hit, but he seemed to be sticking around, and i decided to try and do an undercut on the pit strategy, pitting bang on half-distance, as it happens, but after putting in my laps, came out ahead of the previous leader, just lower cars who were behind me who hadnt pitted.
I was gaining tons on him, until i lost the rear out of a slow corner, requiring a dab of reverse, which cost me the 7sec lead i'd built up.
By the time we got to the S/F line, the temp leader, came out ahead of us both!

Unfortunately, the same lap, while going around the carousel the 3 of us and a backmarker (1-2-B-Me) the leader lost his rear (RUF) on the exit and 2nd couldnt avoid him, the backmarker slammed on the brakes, i braked but too late being truthful, and just about managed to go off-road and miss the backmarker, clipped 2nd and sent him spinning (his race was ruined already) and somehow managed to keep the car pointing the right direction without sliding into the wall or wrecking my car.
Its a real shame though, cos i think it could have been a decent race, and the guy who walloped the wall out of T2 was about 6sec behind and closed that down to about 3sec in the final 8 laps, so nowt wrong with his car either.

Sadly, only a 1704 SOF, so the 1st pts (109) was less than the 4th i got earlier (120) :D
+70 and -0.05 for 9x (2 contact, 1 off track, wide too, damnit!).

So a net gain of 127 and a loss of 0.06SR, for 4 hits, 2 which i had no fault in, 2 which i was caught up in. Only 1 off-track (2 incl going off-road in the pile-up), so thats something at least.

Damnit, didnt realise the Zolder 2.4h race was this weekend.
Havent done WSCS, so might bail on that one (stupid VIR!) and spend tomorrow hammering it around Zolder, I dont expect it to be as good as Spa, smaller track and a few places which you have to drive close to the off-track to get through the chicanes without losing a ton of time.

It'll be fun though, and provided you can do it cleanly, its a great way to pick up a chunk of SR due to the length of the race, and theres only 1 start where everyone is bunched up :D

Is there only one race on Road Warrior at Zolder this weekend? If so it sucks that its at 01:00 :(

**EDIT***

Scratch that, there is a 20:00 GMT race as well, might give this a go, never done a race that long before :0

I like the sound of the weekend endurance race. My week on RA is going from bad to worse, I just can't feel like I've got a decent setup absolutely every one I've tried feels like it slides around all over the places and is not planted.

Quick one for you pros. If I'm in qualifying and I catch the dirt and get an "off the track, 1x", does this affect my lap time at all?

well less than 2 weeks to get to my c licence.. just purchased the ruf and road atlanta.. although i wont be racing it this week i love the track the car is also great just a massive step up from a jetta lol...

force feedback is deff required to race the ruf so saving for wheel and just gonna race the slower cars until im ready to compete in the ruf

How are you getting on with the RUF?

i made my first paint for it, pretty simple but it's stepping stones towards something more complex.

Paul, how do you rate the obutto? I'm looking at solutions for a rig, it's perhaps not the cheapest but it looks like it offers lots of options, and screens mount separately, so no vibration issues.

Matt, I'll be in a few races this evening hopefully if you're joining the last day at RA.
