iRacing

finally got to GT3 after a week of me bashed into, taken out by back markers or insane re-joins  , bought the BMW as a decent beginner car. might pop on Sebring later to try it out on the fanatec series

Not raced in weeks, various reasons including spending time working on my car irl trying to get it ready for an MOT but yeah... Plan was/is to do GT4 this season, did some practice at Adelaide for the first week but never actually raced and not fired it up since.

Part of my excuses is that with a wheelstand I need to actually move it/get it setup, so clearly I need a proper rig setup, that'll fix it :p

well first race didnt go to plan in gt3, car spun back onto track and took me out:rolleyes: always the way, new learning curve needed though hugely different from what i drove before. but should be a blast

I bought the rig and then bought a desk that was too big and the rig got relegated to corner. Decided to do some Feng Shui, bought some longer cables and going to start the re-ordering of the room tonight. Need to make room for the rig so I'm not banging my arm on the radiator! Determined to get some use out of this iRacing sub :p

Managed to sort the rattle on my Simagic P1000i throttle as well. All working as it should do. Just need to get all my Fanatec gear on the bay now to cover the cost of the Evo base and Neo. Busy boy this evening!!

well this is interesting, since update have had werid performance issues, my fps was tanking even though had pretty much low across the board, so today disconnected my BT dongle for headset nd unparked all cores, now my performance has returned, im rock solid 130fps, my monitor is 100hz but gives me some space

There was a few occasions during this weekend's Nurburgring 24 hour when I was seeing noticeable frame drops. Wasn't just me either, team mates were seeing the same so potential server issues?

Also, we managed to win our N24 split in the TCR class (split 3). First time doing it in a lower class car. It was a puckering experience at times

Want to get back into it, but the thought of needing to practice for 1-2 hours for a "quick" race creates a significiant barrier.

ive just sold my moza setup , just found it very rough and vibrates like hell until tyres warm up, so need to get new setup, simagic is obvious choice but will nose about, hard not racing though, i miss it already lol

Mulling over whether to do the Indy 500 this evening, qualified top 50 so should be in split 2. My main worry is endless cautions and getting cramp in my right foot from having to feather the throttle in dirty air for 3 hours.

I Decided i wanted to get into Sim Racing, had this lot delivered on Friday and signed up to iRacing over the weekend. It's been a lot of fun and a steep learning curve. Still plodding along in the MX-5 at Oulton Park.

Mainly just concentrating on being smooth and keeping out of trouble.

Simagic Alpha Pro Wheelbase
Simagic Neo GT Wheel
Simagic P1000 Pedals

Purchases over the next few weeks:

Hydraulics on the pedals
FFB on the pedals
Handbrake
Gear Shifter

Will eventually either go triple screen or VR.

I did two. Both ended prematurely with crashes.

What was the trick with qualifying? There's definitely some knack to it, but nobody wants to share the technique.

1. Before leaving pit stall rev the engine in neutral (with engine mode set to 8) at around 9000rpm until oil temp reaches about 200 degrees
2. When exiting pitlane do not go above 100mph and accelerate once you go past the cone, this trick is relevant to all oval cars on asphalt.
3. On straights reduce weight jacker to -20 to reduce drag and then return it to around +10ish on the corners. This is very tricky to do manually so people create macros using third party software which allow you to do instant adjustments to the weight jacker

There is a video on how to set the macro up using joystick gremlin if you can be bothered, it's how i figured it out. No use now but could be useful for future years if you do it again.

Thanks. I saw the oil trick and tried that, but was still 3 / 10ths slower than the fastest I saw in my Q session. Some guy did a 38.5, which on that fixed set was v impressive.

That's a lovely set-up

What monitor is that?

I've used a TV, super ultrawide, VR and triples for sim racing and for the ease of use for the FOV offered super ultrawide was the winner. Love VR for the immersion, I feel like I'm in the car and on a track but the summer heat is a nuisance and fun spoiler.

hell of a setup for a newbie into sim racing, most start down low, in case its not for them. well at least you cant blame the gear, its not as if u have non LC pedals and non DD wheelbase:cry:

I was thinking the same thing

It is a lovely setup though @Sega Mega Dave not criticising at all :) Just a lot of people do seem to get into sim racing and then quickly realise it's not for them, saying that if that does happen I hear MCFC_ANDY was looking for a simmagic setup :p

I've been slacking a bunch recently with iRacing, I think a combination of the wheel stand being 'hassle' to setup along with moving up into the GT4's (or trying to) which I'm still not comfortable in and even the nice weather/longer days meaning more time working on/driving my real cars and of course playing golf has all led to very little sim racing time...

Was round a mates the other night though and he had his setup so I did a bit on his, compared to mine he's got triples vs my ultrawide, pedal (and chair) haptics and the new Moza CS Pro wheel. Reminded me I missed triples from way back in the day, ultrawide is nice and all but it's not the same, but also my setup being shared with work ends up with the screen much further away than his which was also a factor.

Biggest thing though was the pedal haptics, drove the M2 which was enough to show just how much of a game changer that can be, one of my issues with the GT4's I think is getting too much into the ABS, on the MX-5 I was driving you can abuse that and only really get a detriment in the endurance races with the tyres getting hot, in the GT4 (and M2) both on cold tyres and even after a couple of laps getting into the ABS just seems to hinder the times. I did get a cheapo setup from aliexpress but need to 3d print a bracket for it, sooner rather than later I guess :p

I did like the wheel too, the dials and 'joystick'/funky switches were a good step up I felt over my RS V2/KS wheels, especially the latter, I think I see a KS Pro in my future :p

i found in beginning just changing my in game brake force down to say 75-85 kept me out of abs until i got muscle memory, haptics can help a lot on the brake, rest is a bit gimmicky imo, but a lot would disagree. i have stayed out of haptics atm, just seeing whats coming down the line.
been busy with work and had to delay my evo sport package until today my simsonn pro plus pedals ive had for an age, so be nice to compare them to the p700. i dont play enough to justify mid/high end gear. plus had such a bad run of late in gt3, i needed the break, im sure i got target painted on my gt3

Might have to give that a go, or just get the haptics sorted and 'learn it properly' :p I agree with the other haptics though, not sure I see a point, my mate had one on the chair and I didn't even really notice it until he mentioned it! But the brake pedal haptic was really nice I felt.

I did see a post/thread on the iRacing forums that they've got ideas of putting a pedal haptics specific setup in the sim itself, similar to the way they can setup the 'buttkickers', which could be good as they might add more of the wheel lock/spin/TC stuff that currently is unavailable because they don't output it over telemetry. But really it's the ABS that seems so important/worth it as you step up the cars... If anything I think I found it harder in the GT4 (again especially cold tyres) than the little GT3 stuff I've done...

I think I also just have a tendency to overdrive the car, especially for sports cars, I've always felt more comfortable in the formula cars (well, the slower ones like skippy and FF1600) where I think you can 'overdrive' them and still be ok, with the sports cars it just seems like you need to be way more disciplined, you can't rush the braking/entry and sort it out at the apex cause you never get to the apex

i think most have tendency to overdrive, its just getting caught up in the moment, especially if/when getting taken out or taking yourself off. or its discipline as well, as driving mx5 etc as you said are very forgiving, gawd i love throwing around the mx5, but i just cant drive like that higher up power chain, ive learnt that the hard way
you learn to drive mx5 ff1600 then you have to relearn driving style next level, even the gr86 you cant overdrive hugely, but a lot more forgiving than say gt3 and higher
