Is anyone else staying up for the US presidential debate?

Romney was a lot more polished than Obama tonight; he spoke much more fluently and had plenty of facts at his command, where Obama seemed a bit rusty and reluctant to engage. On that basis, Romney won the debate.

Problem is, I just don't believe a word that Romney says, and I don't think he believes most of it either. Obama is a conviction politician, where Romney will just say anything it takes to get elected. I felt like most of what he said tonight didn't actually reflect his personal positions. Half of the anecdotes he brought up were about people he'd have written off as freeloaders in his nasty '47%' speech.

I literally think the exact opposite of everything you just wrote. But, it looks like I'm in the minority... :o

I'm shocked that people are talking up Romney's performance, I thought he was awful. Obama looked a bit uncomfortable at first, but got cooler and cooler as they proceeded through the debate. Romney looked worse and worse.

I am sickened that people thought Mitt won this, unbelievable.

This comment is scary. You seem quite happy for failure to continue. It's ok to go bust but as long as he's cool. ¬_¬

Romney is a classic case of someone who can talk a lot but say very little - on a debate which was about the economy, taxes and healthcare he spent far more time talking about things he would repeal than what he would put into place which has been an ongoing theme - it's easy to make your moon-on-a-stick fantasy plans sound plausible when you avoid giving any details whatsoever beyond 'There are a number of options we're considering, just trust me'.

I would hope in the cold light of day this would become evident, although his campaign has shown such shameless disregard for the truth - "We're not going to let our campaign be dictated to by Fact Checkers" that I wonder if it will even register.

Do you follow US politics closely? The Republicans have been systematically blocking _everything_ Obama tries to do(how can he be a failure when he is unable to implement most of his ideas?). The Republicans don't care if America fails just as long as they can replace Obama with a stooge to prop up the wealthy and corporations.

So just give up then? never have hope ever again... doom and gloom.

On the contrary - there is a chance for change, but neither of these two candidates are anything other than misery for America, just as British elections will be full of morons who will change nothing.

Not greatly but I do follow a lot of it. That and the fact I've got so sick of listening to British politics/press. Plus it's not something I like to talk about online. As politics never ends well. But Obama has always infuriated me. Couldn't stand him in 2007/8. Can't stand him now.

How has Obama helped the middle class etc before he lost congress? and anyone in their right mind knows you don't spend your way out of debt. What experience has he had in the past? he's never ran anything in his life. He's a chancer. Amongst of many but this one had a lot of power.

I really wish there was a balance with politics. Always crisis management, either a flood or drought. Nothing ever trickles.
The same with the UK government, you don't cut down the entire rain forest without having new trees planted and prepared. You know how government thinks long term.

Was in a bar earlier, like a sports bar, evwn though they had like 10 screens showing the Yankees planting the Red Sox they still had one screen with the debate.

It's all they talk about in the news right now.

I watched it and Obama needs to go on the offensive next time. You can't keep coming back with the same argument if the guy next to you is happy to lie willy nilly when it suits him. Keep picking at his ill advised 47% speech at a private meeting and his inability to submit his tax returns and prey on his countless mishaps and changing of opinion when it suits him.

At the end of the day people believe not much will change if either guy wins so why not just vote for Romney then. And let's see how fast the ship sinks in anarchy if he gets to scrap the one decent thing Obama has done in his tenure, amongst plenty of other things that will be reformed.

US Politics is so much more interesting than what is on offer in Europe if only for the sheer stupidity on display and lack of morality shown by the candidates. Politics is a necessary evil were led to believe. How about some politicians with integrity and a backbone. Maybe I'm taking the TV show I'm currently watching (Boss) to heart too much but it pretty much sums up what it really must be like to be in the game.

I didn't watch it as I was a bit preoccupied, but frankly I wouldn't worry to much as the actual chances of a Moro...sorry, Mormon getting into the White House in any other capacity than a visitor are pretty remote.

Never say never, after all Bush was voted in for a second term.

Never say never, after all Bush was voted in for a second term.

He was up against John Kerry, a relative no-hoper and even then the race was far closer than the Republicans would like to admit. The first term he simply cheated to his way into the White House.

Besides George Dubya Bush was a popular politician, a total nobber in many ways, but he appealed to the Christian Right and the conservative middle classes, Romney has some issues in that area.

Romney apparently. I'm always surprised that the British are so interested in American politics, when most Americans wouldn't be able to name one British politician.

I think its because American politics are in our media a lot more often that British politics are in America. And who could seriously be interested in our boring PMs :p
