Is it a good idea to deposit casino winnings into your bank?

I went into my branch to put in a cheque for 22k and got a strange look and then taken into the managers office to be asked all about it. I was a bit hacked off actually because I was busy that day but I suppose not many people do it very often so it must look odd. That said only an idiot would put ill gotten gains in their personal account so like I said I was quite curt with the manager for keeping me so long as she was trying to pitch to me their whole range of ISA's after she finished asking after the origin of the cheque.

If it's cash the bank may ask question you, in any case I believe they have to advise HMRC for that amount. As long as you have the receipt to show (and keep) there will be no problem now or in the future.

He doesnt have 20 to 30k. This is lolasim we are talking about here!

Heh I know! My post was in irony of this being an Asim thread, I would have thought this would have been obvious but next time I'll be a bit more obvious :p

Any self respecting and legal Casino will deposit the money into your nominated account for you.

^^^ this

If you won it in a tournament then why not just get it transferred or get them to write a cheque.

If you won it playing a cash game then I'd suspect you're either telling porkies or it was the result of many cash games...

Either way I don't see the issue - just deposit it and if the inland revenue asks then just tell them where it came from - you'll have a casino members card etc... details of when it was won etc..

I find it suprising that you were asked all about it as that is skirting remarkably close to breaking the "tipping off" rules. Trying to flog you stuff is unsurprising but grilling you about where the money is from is certainly unusual.

Any deposit of over 10,000 euros is notifiable, breaking it in to smaller chunks shouldn't work either as it is the total amount rather than individual deposits.
