Is it ok to be proud to be white?

you are not allowed to be proud to be white, male or straight these days

well that's not actually correct, you are supposed to be ashamed of being any (or all) of them

In reality I would never say I am proud to be white but for no reason other than it's what you are and not something you have achieved

It's comments line this that stoke the fire of hatred.

That's your stupid interpretation of what you read in the media.

Tbh Rotty, I expected a more mature response from you. You don't strike me as a typical GD poster, perhaps I am wrong.

I generally think of proud to be black/Asian/LGBTQ etc as being more of an affirmation that they aren’t ashamed to be these categories. a positive statement, that doesn’t really have a connotation of negativity towards the other groups in the main. White pride very clearly does have an association with racism and a feeling of superiority in my eyes based on the groups that state it.

If you go back to the semantics of the word proud then I would agree with many other posters that it is clearly ludicrous to associate pride with skin colour

Why? That’s pretty much true.

I suppose it's because white people face, on the whole, less adversity than other races do. For what it's worth, I think "I'm proud of being black" has to be interpreted in the context of how it's said and what's being said before and after.

'I'm proud to be X' is usually a response to being treated poorly due to being X.

Being non-white in a predominantly white country and suffering racism as a result makes people think 'I shouldn't be ashamed to be X, I'm proud to be X'.

I struggle with identity politics at the best of times. I do not define myself by my colour, gender or sexuality.

However, I can see that if historically people like you have been treated poorly because of any of the above you could say that you feel pride/no shame in having those traits. But to use it to totally define you? That I don't think I will ever understand. Of course that could be my cis-male, white, straight privilege speaking.

In a world where your experience is not coloured by your.... colour.... then it doesn't make sense. But what if you are treated negatively because of your colour?

Black Pride (see also Gay Pride etc) is a counter balance to that

Blacks and gays have been persecuted for centuries. Whites haven't. So I get black and gay pride, that's standing up for yourself in the face of adversity.

I don’t have any qualms with people being proud about it as long as they aren’t harming anyone else.

Very gracious of you, thanks for you permission. I don't feel "proud" as such about being white, it's just a fact. I was brought up not to judge people based on their skin colour but now that's racist or something.

The anti-white cringe is real though (skip to 1:35 for the good bit):

EDIT - Looking forward to being able to teleport when I'm 40.

I wouldn't say I'm proud to be white per se. But I am proud of what my ancestors, as part of the British and Western culture, achieved. The two are naturally linked although I'm proud of their achievements rather than of their colour (and no that doesn't mean I'm proud of everything they did).

Sorry to tell you but according to some people on here you're not allowed to be proud. Please delete your post!!!!111!

:) That's the thing now though. I'm so fed up being told what I can and cant be, say or even feel, that I don't care what those people say anymore. Within reason, as I genuinely don't want to offend people, I think it's important to stand up for your beliefs and morals. The more I hear people telling me my view is unacceptable the more I am inclined to stop listening to their argument. In some ways I feel like I'm being asked to choose a side and I don't choose theirs.

I find those comments come from people who are obsessed with the things they're fed by the media. Critical thinking seems to be on the decline.

I don’t get why anyone would be proud of their skin colour, gender or nationality. It’s like being proud of the sun shining, you had no control of it. I would only take pride in achievements through my own work, the rest is down to good fortune or otherwise.

I agree.

If England win the world cup people would go crazy but the team winning is not their own acheivement so whats that all about then?

I can't see this thread lasting long, sensitive topic these days. Here, have an image:

I think in the first two, the interpretation would be it is about culture and heritage rather than skin colour. Otherwise it is also racist.

White culture is something that is not really defined in white majority countries as it is just the culture of that country. You could acceptably say proud to be english, european, american etc.

Yep, I feel exactly the same.

I feel very lucky to have been born as a white person in a fairly wealthy western country. I don't feel proud about it and it's not an achievement.
