Is it ok to be proud to be white?

Which makes it a nonsense. We're all part of the same species and nearly all of us are a mixture of some kind. And regardless, being proud because your shade of skin looks similar to the shade of those that prcoeeded you makes no sense at all. You weren't around. The same applies for feeling shame for the horrible things your predecessors did. If we're taking count, white europeans are right at the top of the total dicks list over the centuries. But they weren't us, and we shouldn't feel shame.

There are degrees of of separation. I feel more closely tied to my family than the people of my nation, but more closely to the people of my nation than those of my race, and more close to those of my race than the human population as a whole. That doesn't mean I don't consider myself human and take pride in the achievements of our species, it's just I'll always feel closer to the things that are closer to me.

And I don't take pride in my skin colour, it just so happens that skin colour is a useful marker for (generally) identifying those of European descent. That is what I am taking pride in, not the amount of melanin in my skin.

As for white Europeans, we've the best thing to have happened to the world. I don't necessarily believe this is due to some innate superiority, but it's clearly true. Under Pax Britannica and Pax America we've seen a far more stable and progressive world than at any other point in history. Everything is getting better.

We shall see, everything fails eventually, bit of jolly good fun it is.

I’d hazard most people are becoming expendable.

I'm proud to be white as it shows my efforts of staying out of the sun are paying off with how porcelain my skin is.

It is only in there last few decades that Europe has at all stabilized, for thousands of years it was one of the most violent and unstable regions on the planet. Brutal British imperialism may have suppressed wars between super powers but violent colonization is hardly an amicable endeavor.

On the 3 year anniversary of this thread it is interesting to reflect and take stock of how things have moved on. If I were to post an equivalent thread in 2021 the topic would now be "Is it ok to not be ashamed of being white?"

I cringe at anyone who is proud of something they did nothing to achieve e.g. the colour of their skin, the size of their body parts ( ), how naturally good looking they are, their IQ etc.

Prides a sin isn’t it?
I know every time I start to feel proud Karma quickly slaps me back into line.

You sure about that?

Did the middle east not exist during this time frame?

While I don't feel specifically "proud" to be white, I don't see any shame in it or feel the need to excuse myself for it like how a lot of media seem to make it that's how i should feel.

Also, there's a real question if I call actually call myself white. Technically I'm Latin American, my father's side of the family is native and quite olive-skinned, and my mum's sides heritage is Spanish by a few generations and quite pale. I pass off as white nearly all the time as I'm quite pale like my brother, we both took after my mother in skin tone. Some people have thought I was Italian before I correct them.

Due to my heritage, i always feel a strong negative reaction when people think i should feel some sort of "white guilt" because not only does it not apply to me but i can see why people can get ****** at others that do have "white guilt"

The response to this topic and it’s resurrection is still the same.

Does skin colour matter? Inherently, no.

Should you be made to feel bad about your skin colour? Inherently, no.

Is it ok to feel good about your skin colour? Feelings are feelings *shrug* we don’t have full conscious control over them and limited bother and weight should be placed on them. Pride does tend to make one prone to reacting negatively to others though.

I do understand why people feel disgruntled and attacked by this so called ‘white guilt’ movement when they don’t feel personally culpable. I imagine it’s quite like what it feels like to at the receiving end of any unfair abuse for your skin colour.

Ultimately there needs to be more compassion and less attack/defence. It’s just wasted energy.

Everything you achieve is a product of your genetics, your IQ will be largely responsible for any academic achievements, or even worse your socioeconomic status. Basically you can't be proud of anything by your logic.

Alert: free will discussion approaching :p

That's not strictly true.

Well - although I agree it does seem to be the implication - he didn't say solely a product of your genetics. I think the point stands as is. I believe many people don't appreciate that it's such a major factor that it's truly impossible to discount it and still be observing reality.
