Ok bit of advice needed please. I have decided i want a 1440p monitor so....

current pc is a
GBYTE GA-X58A UD3R
[email protected]
1x2gb twin frozr 6950
6gb ram
750 watt corsair psu

This complete pc will be passed on to my boy for gaming middle of next year(he always gets my cast offs and the current cast off is really slow now).So anything in it will not be going to my new one.

What i want is a gpu that will run the 1440 monitor at decent settings. I know i wont be maxing anything, thats fine as the monitor will last 6 years or so and this pc will only be running it for 6-8 months. I am trying to split next years upgrade so my bank account doesnt feel overly raped.

As the pc will be used for a few years after im done with it I dont mind chucking a 7990 in it if its worth it (Would rather I paid for a 7950 but will go to the 7990 if I have to).As long as it will not bottleneck to badly etc and will do a decent job on the 1440 for me in the meantime.

I did look at crossfire. I opened my case looked at the size of the 6950 and the fact i have a soundcard card in a slot and thought thats really tight,No way i'll be getting 2 7950's in there!

So just grab a 7950 and oc it and live with it until i do a full upgrade? or go nuts with a 7990?

Cheers for any advice!

The Matrix Platinum 7970 would be a good bet until 2H 2014 if you just want a 1440p stop-gap. Assuming you clock the nuts off it. :)

But if the 7990 at it's current cheapo price won't hurt you financially, I'm sure your son would REALLY appreciate it when it gets handed down (assuming he's at least 10 or so) ;)

But we really need the final info on Hawaii (R9 290X) for these types of threads.

Gibbo said AMD are not happy with the low prices on the 7990.

Quite frankly it will go up to come in line with the new range of R9 cards. It will be faster than the 290X (top single GPU card) and if the 7990 is priced under 500, that interferes with the R9 pricing. It is speculated that the 290X will be 500 give or take 50 quid.

The 7990 for under £500 is an utter steal. If I didn't already have 2 7970's I would be all over that. My 2 7970's with water-blocks probably cost double the current pricing of the 7990 :(

Yes... you might run into some bugs and of course you would need a monitor bigger than 1080p to utilize it. :)

1600p here :)

Two 7970's will match it for brute force and beat it on price at current prices... around £460 or just over that at £500 if you want a pair of Platinums.

Must admit though I'm having thoughts of maybe returning the MSI 7970 I bought (not arrived yet) and going for a 7990 instead (my PSU would need upgrading for two cards). But then that leads me to start thinking about 290x... better to stay sub £250 on a budget I think.

Gibbo has a finite amount of stock left and has warned once they are gone - thats it.

I am confident/hopeful/preying that future deals will still come from OcUK even after the new 290 range is out... :D

(loved the AMD fridays - long may they continue)

I've got 1080p and notice the difference of switching up from 1 to 2 cards immediately...restriction free settings at this res and in the future you know you'll go for a higher res :)

Thought the 7990 suffered from coil whine? If it wasn't for that, and remaining unconvinced the micro-stutter problems are fixed, I'd be all over this deal

All cards suffer from coil whine to a certain degree. This is lessened with running vsync or limiting the frames via software. Also, most reports of coil whine say that it lessens with use.
