is the extra VRAM really that beneficial?

I had a 3080. Now on a 4070 Ti which I got for £575 brand new and not had a single issue with vram in anything I play. Much better than being stuck on a power hungry 3090 that is slower with no likely no warranty left by now I say :D

its always that way though, you pay through the nose for flagship and lose the most in depreciation when the new generation keep up with it for less money and power draw.

the 2080 Ti is a good example, the owners must have had a heart attack when the massively cheaper 3070 came along and was a match for their very expensive flagship 20 series cards.

and the 4090 owners will get a shock when they see a 5070 Ti mostly keep up with their cards for half the money.

But most of the market is limited to prebuilt systems and most gamers still are limited by realworld budgets - it's easy to forget this as we are enthusiasts. Most gamers don't build their PCs - they buy them. Also you can invalidate your warranty if you change out parts on a prebuilt system. Its why cards like the RTX4060/RTX4060TI/RX7600 are disasters for the market.

A bit like some of the low end Apple branded products(8GB of RAM on their entry level laptops and desktops) - they are trading on the brand but not the product.

Its not general practice for people to change cards every year, especially as you need to be really interested in keeping track of prices. So its great if you are willing to put that effort in to minimise the upgrade costs.

However,I think you overestimate how much people know about tech. Plenty of people spend £1000s on phones to get better cameras. I spent less buying a cheaper phone and a dedicated camera and lenses and have more fun,and probably better images too.

True. But that is on them and these companies. A lot of the points we make here are among us enthusiasts.

Oh and I am still on a Note 10+ as it does everything I need. Just annoying they stopped doing security firmware and software updates. Somewhat tempted to grab a S24 Ultra as it would work out around £600 after cashback, selling the watch they give and sending in my old Note 3 I have lying around.

These days I upgrade every 4 years roughly
S24 Ultra will get 7 years of support and I might keep it for that long. Good value for £600 then

Curry's were doing clearance S23 Ultra 256GB and 512GB phones for £200~£400 but it sold out in 10 minutes. I got in just after 10 minutes! :(

Had my S20FE for over three years. Not too bad for £300!

Yep. I hate it when a card depreciates a lot. If I know that is happening I tend to sell.

Like I sold my 3070 for £400 and got a 3080 Ti for £575. Both cards depreciated a similar amount in the time I kept the 3080 Ti. So had I just kept the 3070 I would have lost about the same.

Will see how much my 4070 Ti loses when I sell it. I will again look at what 3080 Ti's would have sold for when that happens and I will see how much extra I lost. Don't think there will be much in it.

3090 users lost so much in depreciation that I would probably be able to get like 4-5 upgrades with that money

The entire 30xx series* was horrendously under specced on VRAM.

I had a 3070 and it was a lemon because of the 8gb, I started quickly hitting the limit and getting severe frame capping even on older games.

I guess, if you play single player games, 1080p 60hz, then it should be ok, if you are playing 1440p at higher 140+ refresh plus, then forgot it.

*Other than the 3090 I guess.

Going by the displays people have on here and the sig info its quite safe to assume its not 1080p 60hz! ;)

Where vram is becoming handy however is other interests or work related cases such as LLM's and local chat tools. nvidia have also dropped out their chat with RTX app which like other tools depends on how much of it you have.

I think the big problem is the up selling this generation from both companies. Should have been at launch:
1.)RTX4060 8GB/RX7600 8GB for £200
2.)RTX4060TI 16GB/RX7700XT 12GB for £300
3.)RTX4070 12GB/RX7800XT 16GB for £400
4.)RTX4070 SUPER 12GB/RX7900GRE 16GB(with full speed RAM) for £475
5.)RTX4070TI 12GB/RX7900XT 20GB for £550
6.)RTX4080 16GB/RX7900XTX 24GB for £700

Each tier would have increased performance by almost 50% and VRAM would be increased too.

That would be lovely and I would have got a 4080 straight away. Even at £799 I would have got one. But much more than that and it becomes over priced imo.

Enlighten us then, how much did you pay? Most paid 3090 FE price or more. Also most would have run out of warranty by now no?

i upgraded mine that cost an extra £180. For the 12gb VRAM and about 14% faster performance, all with a 2 year warranty..not too bad.

Sure. But from what though? Go into more detail. Sounds like a rather relatively recent purchase.

Like I could say I upgraded mine that cost £100. That is what happened essentially as I sold my 3080 Ti for £475 and got my 4070 Ti for £575. But you would not know that unless I said so :p

When did you get it and what was the cost? :)

I got a 3080 FE in 2020, for £650 from the place you get FE cards. I mined 1 ETH with it during the GPU mining craze.

Sold it recently for £450...

Got a 7900 XTX MBA from these forums the other day for £700.

In terms of raster performance the gains are larger than the extra cost to me, with the 3080 covering 2/3 of the 7900 XTX cost. In terms of RT it's a mixed bag of course, with the XTX being behind the 3080 by a large margin when using Minecraft Bedrock RT for example. And of course the loss of being able to use DLSS etc

But lots more VRAM I may or may not ever need!

£450 is very nice!

Another good thing about the 3080 if you got one for MSRP, won't lose anywhere as much money when it comes to selling it on :)

Cool. When was this? Last year I suppose and not brand new?

Not knocking that by the way. Just saying what I was talking about is msrp prices which is what most people here would have paid.

Personally I would much rather my 4070 Ti brand new with 3 year warranty which I got for £575, but horses for courses :)

Perhaps not £450 usually though :D

£650 MSRP was definitely a bargain for the 3080 at launch! Compared to the prices of cards these days!
Or play Far Cry 6 with optional texture pack.

Lol. What a solution

I need to get round to playing Far Cry 5 first! Last time I played it I got motion sickness which put me off, and I've not tried it again since. 3 and 4 were fine!

Yeah the average price on here last time I checked mm, 3080s were going for about 300-350, which is still pretty good going and still a bit of a bargain at that price.

That's the thing, which many people overlook when it comes to 3080, the naysayers who only focus on the vram don't look at the overall package.... The same way people who prefer amd generally avoid the overall package and only focus on vram amount and raster and block out everything else. In the big picture when you compare the "average" performance to likes of 3090, the bang per buck the 3080 offered was simply unmatched. Yes it was hard getting one for MSRP and many overpaid big time i.e. £1+k, personally I would never have paid that and just held on to my vega 56 for longer but crazy times back then and all that.....
