Ok who is going to be the first top try the update ? :)

Tried it .....

and failed

Burnt a CD , booted. Checked the drive type & it identified correctly so selected 'D' from the options to flash it.....

it then crashed while denying I had the drive connected :)

PC still works so I'll wait until somebody else gets it working before having another go

from reading the seagate forum, the new fixed firmware won't be ready until tuesday or later.

The middle link I posted doesn't say anything about that, just the bottom one. Some of the Barracuda drives have a firmware fix, some don't is how I'm reading it.

edit: if they're saying it won't be ready til Tues in the forums, they should put that on the KB.

some good news, seagate are offering free data recovery which they can definately get back: http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/19/...ecovery-for-disks-affected-by-fir/1#c16609973

pretty good news i think, shame they didnt confess and give free recovery 2 months ago when the story broke, they have to wait until engadget and the other big websites caught hold of the news:(

luckily i bought with a 5yr warranty rather than 3yr that new drives get.

Hope the 7200.12 drives dont have this problem.

i have mentioned it before but this is all news via third parties about the recovery etc and as such i do not think it can be treated as fact yet. numerous people have been told to wait for an announcement on tuesday (tomorrow) so that is what i am doing.

some people on another forum have also put together a guide of fixing the drive yourself but it is quite complicated.

I've now had my 2 ST31500341AS 1.5TB drives (firmware CC1G) for a month now (got them on 27th December) and they've been fine.

They're still transferring at around 115MB/s, still 100% silent and I've had absolutely no problems with them. The first one holds over 600GB of data which is backed up every night to the other.

My brother has also had one which he's been using as his OS drive since the 27th December and his has been perfect.

Craig.

Ooh - new stuff I've found:

The fact that the online checker thing isn't reliable is being reported on other forums too.

These have just appeared in the Seagate KB:
For Diamondmax Drives
For Baraccuda Drives

More on Baraccuda Drives
(these with the tagline "we're working on it"

Looks like I don't have to prat about with live chat and skyping America now!

Just tried the Barracuda link on my 2x1.5TB and 1.0TB drive
All three came up as Ok and no action required.
However I received an email a few days before that gave me a link to upgrade the firmware on my 1.5TB drives.

where is the online checker for serial numbers? All i can find is drive detect but that doesn't say if i need to do anything or not.

I'd like to know this as well please, I'm guessing they've made a program that analyses your drive to let you know if you have the crap firmware?
