Is the Seagate 7200.11 the new "deathstar?

bear in mind the results aren't always accurate - although they may have updated it since I used it. It told me that my ST3500320AS wasn't affected, yet it was already bricked!

Well thats mine gone pop :(

Came home today to hear a loud whining noise from the HD area........

Rebooted the PC

Hung loading windows....

Rebooted again & it came up but with lots of head "re-seeking noises" and HDtune has it as failed with sector reallocation errors

A very nice man at OcUK gave me a RMA number and has put on my file that I'd rather not have it replaced with another 7200.11 :)

All of this has been extremely damaging for seagate and has gauranteed i won't be buying any of their drives anytime soon and i suspect i am far from alone in that desicion. I have bought one sammy and will be buying another soon so that two sales lost as i did narrow it down to seagate or samsung.

Some QC manager at Seagate isn't going to be getting a big bonus this year...

It's a pity, I know they deserve to lose business over this but the hardware is still good. Before the 7200.11 Seagate were known for making reliable drives. A reputation shot to pieces through one stupid error.

the thing is its not allways about the error itself its how the company treat the customers thats so annoying and the upsetting part.

They took forever to acknowlege the issue and blocked users forum posts. totally unacceptable

Yes it seems bad, but Seagate were (I'm guessing) first trying desperately to assess how many drives were affected and where they were shipped to. Also, they wanted the fix available before owning up to the issue - otherwise they would be asked some serious questions which they simply couldn't answer. From a corporate point of view that's worse than offending mere customers - it makes them look stupid.

If it was one error then you could maybe get by it but the whole 7200.11 fiasco wasn't one error. First error was not having quality standards in place to spot the problem which reared itself quite quickly for a lot of people. Second error was acknowledging the fault with the drives within the company but doing nothing to halt the number of drives sold to customer's and causing them grief or acknowledging the problem officially.

Third but not least was releasing a firmware fix that didn't work and ended bricking a few drives. Let us not of course forget the treatment customer's have had which has also been terrible and you have the appearence of a company that doesn't care and takes it's customer's for granted so a kick up the proverbial in terms of sales for a bit might do them some good and return them to their old ways.

One extremely huge error, Seagate will die from this, the reputation hit will make sure that the 7200.12 won't push huge numbers, while SSD's will be in the majority of laptops by next year.

Well I recently built my media PC with one of these drives. Saved the links to the Seagate site for checking the drive and firmware, but I am sure I'll have to upgrade the firmware on the ST3500320AS drive I have. Thankfully I have my critical data on another PC and using part of this disk as a backup over the network, but as its a Media PC it took a while to get it settled the way I wanted it!

So has anyone successfully upgraded the firmware?????

Ck

Did anyone lose the data on their drives after upgrading the firmware? I've got a 1TB that's affected but I'm reluctant to flash it if there's a risk I'll lose all the data.

Either way, it seems likely that I'll lose the data at some point!

I flashed mine from SD15 to SD1A which is what was recommended for my drive.

No lost data and it seems to be acting just fine. Fingers crossed.

I have one of these, and as a result some crossed fingers until the replacement Western Digital drive arrives next week.

This has been a disaster for Seagate...

Thank God I read this, almost ordered a 1.5TB but after reading this, definitely WD is the way to go now. Have had them for years and only one failed because it was too old!

Apologies if this has already been posted!!

A firmware issue has been identified that affects a small number of Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 hard drive models which may result in data becoming inaccessible after a power-off/on operation. The affected products are Barracuda 7200.11, Barracuda ES.2 SATA, and DiamondMax 22

Checked mine, not on the list so we will see!!
