Is the Seagate 7200.11 the new "deathstar?

Just bought one of these (must read the forums more) and after 2 hours it's already making "chirping" noises .

I'll be keeping the packaging ready for the RMA

Unlucky mate. Run HD Tune is the drive showing any errors?

Mine still continues to make funny noises but still seems to be running fine. I've backed everything up to be safe though, because its my primary drive with the OS installed on it and one day soon might not even switch on!

Can you RMA a drive even though its working, and showing no errors, yet making chirping sounds as though its about to die any minute?

I cloned my original smaller HD to the Seagate just incase of problems and I've packed it away safely. I'll keep using the seagate until it goes pop but will make regular backups to both of my NAS boxes :)

It's a pain in the **** that you have to make a full copy of a new drive because it's a ticking bomb

Just bought a Samsung F1 as Im not going get a 5th Seagate 7200.11.

I think some people are confussed how these drives die. Its not the useral click of death, the computer suddenly reboots and the drive is no longer seen in the bios.

My last 7200.11 I was checking with HDtune which reported no errors right untill its sudden death!

I cant trust these drives anymore.

Cripes !

Are the 7200.10 series starting to fail as well ? I have three 320GB model across 2 machines

Have 2x 250gb's of them in raid 0 since September ‎2006, so far so good. I think ( hope) the 7200.10's are and stay fine.

My 500gb 7200.11 has just died, lasted 19 days :(.

Getting the boot error, pc is fine with a different drive, tried the faulty drive in a different pc and an external enclosure and its dead as a dodo.

500gb 7200.11 died here too, lots of CRC errors in my music collection, Seagate's own drive tools confirms it's death. Anyone getting failures on their newly returned drives? I'm going to be hitting the roof if a second one fails too, this should not be happening.

For those of you buying 7200.11 1.5TB drives, there is a firmware update available from seagate which addresses a few problems. The main being these drives have a habit of randomly getting dropped out of RAID arrays.

Seems there are too many problems with this drive wouldn't it be better for Seagate to issue a product recall and sort it out rather then keep selling the drives have them fail and put people off buying their drives for a very long time. Just seems to me the reputation for these drives is already in the toilet they would do themself a big favour by stopping the sale of them now and maybe saving a few customers. So glad i went for the Samsung over this as it had boiled down to either the Samsung or the Seagate.

Nah - it's impractical. The OEMs would go mental and the costs and lost sales mean Seagate would go end up going bump. The warranty will cover any problems.

It may well do but i know i certainly wouldnt want a reconed drive after i just bought a new one and 2 weeks later its dead.

Warranty isn't covering it well though is it people are sending back their first dead drive and ending up with a second one not long after. There comes a point where they have to decide whether they do more damage to their company doing nothing or doing something. As it stands right now i would choose a six inch nail driven slowly into my head over buying one of their drives and many seem to feel the same.

I can't remember which forum it was (problem when you read too many) but one guy was on his SEVENTH replacement that is also now dying and he is adamant he wants a refund not another replacement so thats eight drives that have not got seagate a penny how much longer can a company go on like that before they are in trouble as many that have the drives die on them take a replacement only for that to die as well.

Add to the damage being done to their reputation and a product recall as there has to be a manufacturing problem here may well be the best thing they can do while they find out what the hell has gone wrong.

Lol seems I’m now victim of these Seagate 7200.11's, one of the two 320GB's has begun to show 'spin retry errors' on a regular basis. So I’ve binned them both and re-installed two older x2 250GB 7200.10's; of which I trust due to using loads of them and never had one fail.

Still have one 500GB 7200.11 though, as back up for the main 2 drives - so if it dies then it's not a major problem.

Does anyone know if replacing the controller card on the 1tb drives can rescue it once its stopped being picked up in the BIOS?

I think one of the early posters in this thread said they tried this and it didn't work so i haven't got high hopes.

Mine has now started making a loud buzz/whining noise, the sooner it goes pop the happier I'll be

Just been sorting out my storage disks and decided to get rid of the last of my PATA HDs in my new rig, so went for an additional 1TB SATA drive. I would normally have gone for a Seagate but you lot persueded me otherwise :)) Got a WD Black instead...

Just taken back my last dead seagate to the shop I got it from. The returns department gave me a tough time as it was my 3rd dead seagate 7200.11. They said I was the only person to have returned this drive and they have never heard of my problem and say they are in daily contact with seagate.

They went on to say its my rig causing this problem. However, they could not answer back when I said each time the HD has failed its been on different conectors and my other 3 HD's have been unaffected.

I do not know if this has been posted or not, but a bunch of us were trying to find a solution on the official seagate forums until the mods decided to close the thread when it had like 15 pages of replies and now close and delete all new threads about the issue.

the original big thread is still up there, but i do not know how long it will be there for. in the mean time a new thread has been set up here. i dont think they are competitors or anything so hope this doesnt get deleted as well! ha
