Is there any point to buying on release any more?

Yep - all the media cartels have learned the trick of using licensing and contract law to do an end-run around consumer protection legislation. At the same time, they regularly produce broken products at a time when there are more things to spend our money on than ever before, yet they have a massive sense of entitlement to our money.

very true media is massive and can sell any turd.

i hate media as much as i like it it.

very rare to get any honest reviews now.as reviews often look to what they gain if review good or what they lose if they review bad.

no big site of games wants to lose so majority is great game ! as they dont want to be banished from the games makers next time they make a a game.

Never has been unless you really can't wait to play it, the only game I preordered for the last 18 months was GTA V, I haven't even brought the witcher 3 yet, I like to wait for 6 months for all the bugs to be fixed. Also I end up having a backlog of games because they get so cheap lol. Also I like GOTY versions!!!

The only game I have ever bought on release was gta v because I was willing to work through any issue that came with it, no other game has excited me that much to want to do it.

Though by the time you have waited 3 months I have already finished the game, in the majority of cases fairly issue free. ;)

And paid full whack to do so ;)

Besides, others finishing the game before me means very little to me. Pretty sure play testers and reviewers complete it before you even get to buy it on release, means nothing in the end.

That said playing a polished stress free game where you can immerse yourself in the game with minimal bugs I think is a lot more appealing ;)

Oh and did I mention getting it for half price or less? :p

you forget all the corruption such as paying people a financial incentive to guarantee a good review or exposure from well known streamers

I rarely buy games on release day any more. If I'm quite excited for a title, I'll typically buy it sometime during its release week, which gives me more than enough time to find out whether or not it has any game-breaking launch issues.

With the competition these days the majority of digital downloads and pre releases are pretty cheap anyway. Paid £23 for Witcher 3, £30 for GTA V, £20 quid for Dragon Age Inquisition, £12 for Batman(though not going to play that yet.....:p)

Granted some games have big issues on release, but these are the minority, the majority are fairly good and not worth waiting for just to save a tenner. :)

due to having a huge backlog i never buy games on release even if its a good port/not buggy

with the exception of GTA5 and Witcher 3 or a MP shooter like BF or CoD

i only just got Wolfenstien and the expanison for combined £15 and mordor premium edition for £12 very good games playable at release but i got so many others to play no point buying at full price to sit my library unplayed/missing DLC

I remember pre ordering was to make sure you got a copy of the game in case it sold out.

preoderig can but useful in the digital age due to games like with GTA5 and Witcher where you could download 10s of gbs of data and have the game playable the momment its relased

I have plenty of friends with money to burn who buy on release and review all the games for me, then i just buy the ones they cant get enough of after the price drop. One of my friends buy all them game bundles online and steam sales etc, and every duplicate game he gets he just send to me which means i always have about 10 games i intend play at any time.

I think the only game i would buy on release in the foreseeable future would be Half-life 3 if they make it. Just basing that on how much i liked Half-life 1 and 2.

I don't buy on release for the following reasons:

1. I don't like spending money on the unknown.
2. I'm not 15, I've learned this thing called patience over the years, which allows me to wait until I know exactly what the product offers.
3. I always have older games I'm playing or want to start playing. I don't need new shiny things for my gaming fix. :D

well, you have the option to refund on steam now, so it's fairly safe to preorder a game on there.

as to whether it's worth it or not, that depends on how bad you want it I guess.

if it's potential game of the year, I will happily preorder and take a day off work to play it all day on release. if it's a game im not that fussed about, sure I'll wait for 50-75% off on steam sale, got plenty of other games to play in the mean time.

Dont buy on release.

Used to get caught up in the hype but dont anymore.

Last full price game i paid £40 was Elite and im regretting paying full price for that...quite disappointed with some of the things the devs are doing.

Most i will pay for a game these days is around £15 maximum and thats about 4 months and later after release if necessary. Because undoubtedly there will be a crapton of patches and issues with new releases and i cant be arsed getting my blood pressure up getting annoyed because x developer cant make a game without ****** up.... consumer rights for gamers is poor (though recently had an upturn due to the steam refund policy now) so i wont give the developer top dollar anymore for their games as i just dont trust their quality control process.

I only buy on release if its a game which I want to play with friends and they're buying day 1 for whatever reason. To be honest I think the only time that's happened in the past couple of years is with GTA V. I usually wait for a price drop.
