Is there anything wrong in this picture?

TBH the disks and pads look ****** to me.

Agreed.

I've driven cars with brakes like that and the noise is sometimes caused by flaky bits of rust coming out of the centre of the disk and jamming between the disk and caliper. Is the inner pad the same thickness as the outer one? sometimes pads wear unevenly. Think your best bet is a new pair of disks and a set of pads. Also check caliper piston is not seized and that the caliper slides easily.

Took the other wheel off - looked the same as this side.

Took it for another drive around the estate - horrid scraping sound when braking and for a while, when driving (I didn't get above 20mph it was making a noise without the brakes being on - not constantly, but there was a pattern to it :p

I guess if I just get new discs and pads even if it is a stone it'll come out when it gets done :p

Does investigating stone presence require taking stuff to bits? I was well impressed I got the wheel off :o

I was actually shocked by that statement. You seem to be a fountain of knowledge on most things car related but you dont get your own hands dirty?

Deeply dissapointed :o ;) :D

I service the car myself but I'm not super-mechanically minded :)

Changing oil and filters and stuff isn't rocket science though :p

Have you checked the other side of the disc and the other wheel? What you've described sounds exactly like what happens when the pads have worn out.

Would you get a noise after you release the brakes, though, if it was pad wear?

Looking at the picture your calipers are similar to mine, single piston floating caliper. The pads do look like they havent backed off the discs properly so it would hint at the guide pins seizing up or stuck or possibly the piston (but only if the rubber gaiter has perished). Its an easy job to whip it off, get your Haynes manual out and dive in there :D

Some nice drilled and grooved Black Diamond discs would look good. ;)

Yes, thats what happened to me when one of my rear pads had gone. Sounded like a grinding noise and something was banging against something

Stone is only thing I can suggest too.

Happened to me once. Thought something very bad was wrong with the car but it went away in the end.

Could only have been a stone stuck in there somewhere.

I had this problem with my Mondeo Si - it was worn & warped discs.

After a medium or heavy braking the disc would scrape on the pads and make a "fsht fsht fsht" noise as the wheel rotated. Once they'd cool down it would gradually go away until they got past a certain temperature upon which they started again.

As said, replace the whole lot as they're on their way out anyway, I'd expect it all to be fine afterwards.

Well I'm really not thrilled at the prospect of driving it around like that so I'll call into Rapid Fit on the way to Uni and get it done - they are usually suprisingly reasonable for a Ford Main dealer.

Remember on the Southampton meet you wouldnt get in my car cause the rear pads were low. On mine when the pads get low a bit of metal touches the disk to let you know, even with out touching the brakes.

My first thought was... those discs look a little glazed. Did your brakes fade at all Fox?

It wouldn't suprise me if the discs warped while you were having your fun on the moors  If you stopped the car and the discs had expanded, the pads would have been constantly touching the disc causing more warpage.

Hence why the noise goes on... off... on... off...

One part of the disc might be warped more than the others.

P.S. Brakes = easy.

Undo the bolts holding the calliper in place. Remove either the top of bottom bolt and slacken the other. You can then swing the calliper down (or up) without having to faff about taking it off fully.
