Is Waitrose decent/ expensive?

No Waitrose near me so never been.

Hate going to supermarkets too. Always full of people getting in my way. Prefer to go in the early hours or online shop.

Then waitrose will change your opinion of shopping.

No one get in the way, staff are helpful, it's actually a nice place to be.

They are the only supermarket who doesn't use those coin locks on their trolleys, they trust their customers not be a chav and take it and you know what, chavs don't go there lol because they think its too expensive.

Long may that image continue!

Think someone need to do a like for like shop before assuming it is more expensive or if it is, significantly so.

I have done this, and I've read articles in a couple of newspapers that have also done it. Waitrose came up substantially more expensive. My local Tesco doesn't have a coin lock, and even if it does (my local ASDA does) then it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I don't find Waitrose a nicer place to be than Tesco/ASDA. It's a supermarket, it's there to serve a function - not to cheer me up. I also find that the choice in Waitrose is very limited. Though, they are better for wine but Tesco for beer.

So Waitrose price match Tesco on brands? heh

Tesco is probably more expansive than the other big 4 on brands. Also I don't buy brands.

The coin thing is not about convenience, more about attitude towards their customers.

You should come to my local asda or tesco, you get more undesirables than the Sainsbury's, which all of them are within 500 yards of each other, there is also a Morrisons within 10min walk away from Tesco.

In such close proximity, the class distinction (if one has to give it a name) of customers between them is quite apparent.

Choice is dependent, I find waitrose has far more choice. Than even tesco superstore on the sort of things I want.

Prices are very comparable. If you don't buy tesco value
Tesco - waitrose
Standard choped tomatoes 69p - 69p
1kg onions £1.10 - £1.09
broccoli florets £1 (200g) - £1.49 (450g)
Rack ribs £2.50 - £2.97
Parsnips £1.00 - £1.09

First few items of my shop.

I don't buy brands either but the Waitrose stuff is usually the same price. We shifted a while ago from Sainsbury's to Waitrose and our shopping bill is virtually the same (I think a couple of pounds more a week) but the quality of food is generally much better. For example, a big bag of supermarket peppers is about £1.50ish in Sainsbury's for the basics version; it is £1.70 in Waitrose but you get a couple more peppers and they are, in general, much fresher. The meat in Waitrose is also easily the best out of the supermarkets for around the same price (if you buy the essentials range, rather than the Prince Philip organic stuff!).

What Raymond said about the environment is also (largely!) true - it's pretty much the only supermarket where I'm not looking to leave as quickly as possible. The cafe is also very good - the curry served is very tasty :p

I do all my shopping online via Ocado - which is the online arm of Waitrose.

Very impressed with the quality of even the "essentials Waitrose" products and a lot of items are price matched with Tescos. Fruit and veg always seems fresh and last a decent amount of time.

As already said, they also have a greater selection of "higher quality" foodstuffs - I can't even get Tillapia at my local Morrissons and thier own brand Humous is great and has loads of different flavours.

You can get tilapia at your local morrisons. They can order it in for you. The reason they probably say they can't get it is because it probably won't sell after trialling maybe some years ago. Just ask them to call the sales team whilst your there and they can let you know there and then when they can get in for you.

On topic:

Me, my misses and her mum and sister went to visit waitrose in Bracknell the other month. You have to pay for parking or spend £10 and get parking for free. We was very shocked and annoyed about this. What about if you only went in for a loaf of bread? You still would have to pay £2.50 to leave. We parked else where? Over all I wasn't impressed at at all. The fish and meat counter was pathetic I'm sorry to say. They displayed fish the wrong way which can damage the fillets, and there was no display to make me go "wow" it was rubbish. Nothing to entice me to buy the fish on sale or meat.

Some one mentioned the myth about all supermarkets own brands being the same as they are made by the same supplier. That's wrong for a start. Morrisons make ALL their own brand food. Not one item is made by any one else. Can't say the same for other of the big 4 as I don't know for sure.

Granted I realise some stores do charge but as we have never been in a waitrose we wanted to look around and see what it's like. To pay for it was outragous I thought. They could have lost a customer. Actually they did as we didn't buy any thing as we was watched very closely by the security guard as he followed us around from the moment we walked in. :-)

Lol, were you dressed head and toe in Adidas gear?

come again?

my waitrose needs a quid to use the trolleys.

the premises is a total **** wreck with leaky roof in multiple places, the fridges are always breaking leaking all over the shop floor (this happens once a month or so at the least) and also sound like bloody chainsaws .

the fresh food always looks half rotten

the milk section has so much crystalised milk on the floor from were its leaked and not been cleaned up.

the lifts are also constantly breaking, they lost over 500 pounds worth in fresh meat because the lift stopped working trapping all of this meat un refrigerated for hours until the engineer come

and i dont get whats to brag about being the same price as tesco's i want it bloody cheaper not the same otherwise i will just go tesco's in their nice brand new building with brand new fridges ect ect ect
