ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

Having just had the pleasure of a couple of rounds of "it's a small world" with my daughter at Disney I think anyone convicted of being an IS nutter spend a month on that ride.

Was just listening to a podcast which was talking about how to defeat the Islamic State. I liked the idea of re-introducing a Pheonix Program and set its sights on jihadis around the world. For info the Pheonix Program was developed by the CIA as a counter-terror tactic aimed at the Viet Cong. It was enormously successful. That's the sort of thing we have to do if we don't want the Islamic State taking over more and more conquered territories - including our own.

Best way to stop isis is to stop the sauds funding them and Turkey stopping them crossing the Turkish border then romoving their hospital services in Jordan, Israel and Turkey perhaos even get the yanks to stop dropping them supplies.

There are people who think Russia/Assad are the good guys in this?

No one believes they are the super good guys.

They are the lesser of two evils. Islamic extremism of ISIS and the Terrorists or a relative safe haven for most of the citizens who are not Islamic extremists.

There are reports that two years ago, Russia came to the US with a plan for Assad to stand down, go into exile, and a successor from his regime to take control with international backing. The US turned it down. If true, I think they made a huge mistake; a transition that allowed the state to persist would have avoided a lot of bloodshed and allowed ISIS to be repelled.

Now? I'm not sure any such transition is possible. Assad is a monster who has no qualms about murdering his own people in the worst way possible and has been doing so since the start; ISIS are probably worse; and we now far too little about any of the other factions except the Kurds for us to back them. Many of them are no better than ISIS.

We have no clear allies, no clear plan, and no clear endgame in Syria. Under these circumstances we should have no military involvement on any side in Syria. In my view the best approach would be to impose a no fly zone over the entire of Syria and create protected enclaves for refugees. We can't stop the war, but maybe we can save some of the people.

In Iraq, we should be putting boots on the ground and fighting properly alongside our allies in the Iraqi government to drive ISIS out. In Iraq we have a clear goal (drive ISIS out), a clear plan (assist the military of our Iraqi ally in doing so), and a clear endgame (the restoration of Iraq control over the entire country).

I get a feeling external support and funding to ISIS is dropping off in favour of it going to Jabhat - ISIS will likely be left to fall apart sooner than later.

We should start doing what the Americans did during the Communist years and aggressively arrest anyone purporting even the slightest support for terrorism... SLIGHTEST.

Then we can arrest everyone at Amnesty, ;) .

Amnesty international are a joke. Don't believe a word of it but knowing you...... Even if true (unlikely) most of those in the prisons will be foreign jihads who have been attacking the Syrian people so i have no sympathy.

They are ISIS fans.

@Both. Why is Russia now cosying up to Erdogan's Turkey? It wasn't so long ago (when they were putative US allies) that Turkey were responsible for everything the Islamic state did.

Might be part of their current strategy with S-400 installations - with a line of them from Kaliningrad to Crimea and the ones in Latakia the chink is best filled if they have a permanent site in Turkey.

They are calling for a boycott too. Amazing, thank goodness women there don't throw off their shackles, imagine the outcry.
