ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

Even if it was 3% that's still 60,000+ assuming that we factor a figure of 2.2m

My thoughts are there may be thousands of ISIS fighters with many tens of thousands who hold sympathy toward them.

all it shows russia abiding a ceasefire while the west can't

How many ceasefires has Russia violated? In Syria, the Ukraine or Georgia? What goes around, comes around. Add into this the fact that Russia is fast running out of cash and can't afford to keep fighting for Assad and you can see their desperate position.

For the umpteenth time... Who started the trouble in every country you mention, scorza?

Syria: Who funded and provided thousands of pieces of arms and equipment to ISIS?
Ukraine: Who started the conflict?
Georgia: Which nation with its entity starting with C and ending in A meddled?

The answer I the same for all.

How fast is it running out of cash?

At this moment in time, I would rather have Assad than anything the opposition may be. Once the evil of ISIS is scourged we can then move to transition. Sadly, the export of democracy doesn't bode well in countries where the people detest it.

I can't really see (short of genocide) how Syria can really come together as one country again - it became far too much of a melting pot from the region and even if groups like ISIS are wiped out the original problems will still be there simmering under the surface.

This is true...

I always think how prophetic Gadaffi was in 08 when I think. I just cannot detract my principled view that the US is a massive (if not the biggest) source of world instability. I may get shot down for it but its not a baseless statement and is heaped with truth.

A pity there is no real silver bullet now

I'm not sure it is even in the US's interests to see a stable Syria anyhow regardless of their role or not in global stability.

They need instability to keep their hegemony.

You could always strangle ISIS, but I guess they don't want that either. Follow the money...

ISIS has been cut to the wind IMO - a lot of the resources seem to be poured into Jabhat now that formerly ended up with ISIS.

Another issue is how do you stop a group who has support from many hundreds of thousands, the sympathy of millions and the quiet backing of tens of millions of dollars from SA and other Emirate rulers.

Either way, I think the Arab League should start getting their bloodied hands dirty with ISIS and take some of the refugees.
