ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

In a failed state that is in the midst of a 5yr long civil war where so many other countrys and militias are fighting? No, no it won't start WW3.

Worth the squinting to read. Interesting letter.

Syrian soldiers who survived the air strikes have said the area was scouted by US drones the day before. The drones will have captured footage that would have allowed intelligence to determine the eventual targets were Syrian army held positions. Battle lines were static and had not changed for years, they said. Daesh fighters swarmed in after the strikes, some of them were laughing, according to survivors.

When a (furious) Russian Ambassador to the UN asked who was in charge in Washington, whether it's Obama and Kerry (who seemed to desire the ceasefire), or the Pentagon... he wasn't joking, in my opinion.

The only honorable course of action left to the UK is to pull out of tbe illegal coalition and tell the truth about our involvement and the crimes we own up to.

For pun purposes alone I'm looking forward to seeing william hague in the Hague facing warcrimes charges.

Unfortunately it is likely Senator Richard H. Black has an agenda here whether there is any substance to it or not - this is massive political capital for him and certainly not done out of any good intentions.

EDIT: Not liking the direction this potentially could take though - looks like every potential for the US to tear itself apart if there is that much dissent within the ranks and/or massive fallout globally.

From the information to hand its almost conclusive the US with the aid of the British bombed an Assad area to allow ISIS to retake and gain a foothold.

Very worrying

Syria: Arab spring started by Julian Assange's wikileaks..

There was me thinking the main catalyst as a fruit seller setting him self onfire after street store was shut down by police in Tunisia back in 2010 that kicked off the Arab spring, rather than that coward/hypocrite Assange.

Yep. He set himself alight because of what he'd read on wikileaks apparently - the US diplomatic cables about corruption in Tunisia I think.

I find that hard to believe to be honest considering the guy was poor, unable to find work and was hounded by police ending with his 'illegal' wares he was selling being taken off him. Only to read something off the internet which made him do that. I just don't buy it personally

Still its amazes me that one mans action changed that part of the world like that, I wounder if it would have spread to Iraq if Saddam was still in power and if ISIL still would have formed to take advantage of any instability that might of happen

Pretty melodramatic. Of course nothing will actually come of it.

That tin foil hat must be getting pretty heavy! Don't let that get in the way of pure fantasy though.

Likely course of events: the Russians were notified of the coalition intent to strike these locations. Would the Russians warn against that and prevent it from happening though? Of course not :) they'd sit back and laugh at the mess.

You need to apply the same criteria (avoiding pure fantasy) to yourself. Neither the US nor allies have alleged what you have.

Your question and conclusion is based on the assumption that they were notified, and there is no sign they were.

You don't understand how air operations work in the ME do you?

Seems you don't. They only notify each other about their planes being in the air at a certain time and which general area. They don't disclose their specific targets to one another. The Russians have been seeking more cooperation in that regard, and condemned that lack of closer cooperation after the air strikes in question. So you would expect the US and allies to counter by saying they did notify Russia of the target. But they didn't. Which means you pulled your "likely" assumption out of a hat.

There is a lot of deconfliction of assets between Russia and Western allies in Syria. There is also warning when large strike packages are planned as well as other notifications for other strikes suck as ballistic missile missions. It was slow to start when the Russians first pitched up but it was realised that it would be sensible to cooperate to a certain degree in order to reduce risk to one another.

Big sky theory only applies so far.
