Italian Grand Prix 2012, Monza - Race 13/20

Yeah, I was thinking that? How often has someone not in the best car, or one of the best if its a close season, won the title?

You're about to witness it this season :)

Providing Alonso brings it home in the top 4 or 5 in each of the remaining races it will be extremely difficult for mclaren to beat him (without at least 3 races wins).

I don't think the Ferrari is really THAT far behind the other cars this season, more that with everything as close as it is, the cars behind it are a lot closer than they normally would be.

F1 is usually 80% car, 20% driver, but Alonso is making me reconsider that this year.

I think that's a bit narrow minded. You don't (generally) just luck into a good car. Good teams produce good cars and good teams employ good drivers. While the car may be just that years model, the efforts of the driver come from much earlier on. Its far more like 50/50. A great car won't carry an average driver.

I didn't say anything about hiring good drivers, just the end result. Alonso struggled with the 2008-9 Renaults, though he still got a win out of it (two if you think Singapore counts).

As for a great car carrying an average driver - that's happened quite a lot in the past, Button's 2009 season comes to mind. He's a solid driver but never struck me as championship material.

A little unfair.
Alonso has shown over the last few seasons that he arguably the best driver of his generation, by a comfortable margin.

I rate him so highly that I feel it is unfair to compare with him any driver, except Senna, MSc or Prost (over the last 25 years).

To win a title in the 2nd or 3rd best car is unheard of. He almost achieved this in 2010 and is on course to achieving this in 2012. Kimi did great in 2007, though this was against a McLaren team in disarray.

Regarding Button winning the title in the 2nd best car (which McLaren were in 2011): Vettel is currently beating both McLaren drivers in the WDC, in a slower car. How does anybody expect either Hamilton or Button to beat Vettel in a slower car?

Are you forgetting the start of the season when Ferrari were about 1s/lap slower than the McLaren? When Alonso was struggling to make Q3 and Massa was struggling to make Q2?

I think the Ferrari is up front now. Monza showed the speed and if Alonso hadn't had a problem and had stuck it in pole come race day the McLarens wouldn't have seen which way he went.

I imagine the others are worried. He built a large lead when the car was poor, god knows what he will do now its fast.

Lol sunama still going on about the Ferrari being the third best car this season ? Broken record much lol.

Please tell me again how alonso is so amazing because not even senna could win in the second bet car in 92.

Lol

Monza isn't really a good gauge of the rest of the season imo. At the more technical tracks the pace hasn't been there or hasn't been there for anything but a section of the race.

Even if he had got track position on saturday I'm not sure he would have beaten lewis over the race distance. It would have been a lot harder to do the trick of eating the followers tyres at monza which worked so effectively at the slower circuits. The next two races will show us that in the high to mid level downforce circuits they are still 2-3rd fastest.

Either way I cannot wait for suzuka! Just got to get that awful singapore out the way!

It's bloody crazy how Kimi is in 3rd in the table with that Lotus. He's really getting everything he can out of it. Give the man a win already.

Its amazing how different it is this time for him. He's getting more out the car on race days that qualifying. Before he could just about get 1 mega lap out of a car on saturdays when he wasn't comfortable in the car. It seems the reverse now.

I'd love to see him in a big three team again. Red Bull or Mclaren :)
