Nearly impossible to avoid contact if you're trying to go side-by-side through that corner, but it's obviously Vettel's fault. Boxed in behind Raikkonen, a sensible Vettel might have just sat back and waited.

Ultimately Ferrari blew it by only bringing one set of softs for Vettel and two for Raikkonen, then by jumping for the pits at the first opportunity when Mercedes scared them into it - they clearly didn't have a clue how the softs would work, but perhaps that's partly down to the poor weather in the practice sessions.

Excellent race from Hamilton - he's nearing Alonso levels of relentless consistency now. Clearly the faster car on all tyres (grumpy Mercedes complaining in Spa was ******** in the end - his Merc was faster from corner to corner on every straight and on both tyres), and with Vettel out of the question they managed to box Raikkonen in; being stuck behind Bottas didn't help his tyres, but frankly he was going to get passed anyway.

A bit early to call the second half of the season a meltdown as Mercedes were just plain quicker, but it was all a bit messy from Ferrari all round. I feel sorry for Kimi after what has been a couple of brilliant weekends from him.

I was tempted to go with Verstappen for driver of the race after keepimg a Merc behind him and being relatively close to the front at the end, but then he went and did a Verstappen, so it's got to go to Hamilton. A decent recovery from Vettel but it was his fault he needed a recovery in the first place.

As for the 13 people (at time of writing) rating this a 10/10... really? This equals or betters the best race you've ever seen?

As a footnote it struck me that Hamilton might have been stood on that podium slightly regretting signing for Mercedes for what we expect to be the his last contract. He probably feels a final fling in a Ferrari might have been fun with all that support behind him (then he can stop calling every single race's fans the best). Every top driver has to drive for Ferrari at some point and I can't think of any of top tier of all-time greats who didn't drive for Ferrari who's career wasn't ended early. Stewart, Hakkinen and Fittipaldi are the closest I can get, none of who I feel were the best of their eras but most might be in most people's top 10 I suppose.

Vettel - He didn't leave me any space.

I smell bovine produced growth product! A vast, fly attracting pile of it!

The thing to measure it against is what would be said if Vettel did that to Hamilton, what would be said then?

Would it just be accepted he was in the racing line?

Verstappen also received 2 penalty points on his license. Now on 5 in a 12 month period.

Honestly, I'm surprised its so low. I thought he'd be on more. Ironically, I was commenting to my wife part way through the race how much Max had managed to turn things round after his antics at the start of the season. I even used the words "seems to have matured a lot".

Er. Yes? I mean it's clear as day. Hamilton makes the pass, Vettel hits him. Clumsy from Vettel; I'm just pleased that it resulted in natural justice as Lewis's race was unaffected and Vettel was sent to the back. Vettel was extremely lucky that Hartley led to a safety car, without that he'd have been much further back after recovering to the pits and getting a new nose fitted.

Apparently before the podium, a load of the 'fans' were chanting *ahem*Fornicate*cough* you Hamilton
Nice...

[edit]Just seen the video on twitter... Unsurprisingly, all wearing red...[/edit]

And Arrivabene isn't taking it gracefully. In an interview about the race he said "We hire drivers, not butlers" So, all the times you've shafted Kimi over isn't deliberate then?

There is no racing line when you go two-by-two. You leave space for the other driver, whether you're on the inside or outside. What's why I have a problem when Hamilton used to push Rosberg off the track repeatedly (and exclusively, he didn't do it to anyone else) and why Vettel was at fault today.

Obviously Hamilton fans are rejoicing in the fact Hamilton came out on top in this incident, if it was the other way you'd see the opposite reaction.

there was plenty of space for vettel he chose to cut in when he could clearly see Hamilton along side so he got the spin which was his own making

My point exactly, it’s like those football penalty decisions your team gets and it’s a penalty all day long but against you it’s the greatest injustice in the world ever.

Do you realise Raikkonen has been waved past Vettel more times than Vettel has been waved past Kimi this year?

Conversely Mercedes even had Force India drivers waving them through at the worst track for overtaking on the calendar. That was clearly a pre-arranged move as Mercedes pitted Hamilton knowing fine well he would feed back in directly behind Ocon. If a Ferrari or Red Bull was in that position at Monaco they'd still be behind him now.

if vettel went more right, where it seems he wanted to go he would have been well off line for the next corner, he is already looking like he is off the racing line.

Renault have sent a request to the stewards for a clarification on the legality of the Haas VF-18.

Linky

No more info on what the issue is though.

[edit] Apparently it's the floor in particular they are protesting. Something that's been going on for a while but they had to protest here or the FIA would have considered it closed. [/edit]

Ok then, the Renault protest is about the leading edge of the floor on the Haas according to Charlie Whiting it's a "geometric issue"

Much as though I have no time for Ferrari, I wanted Kimi to win. Sadly though, Germans are more organised than Italians.

As an Italian, I wanna take clear distance from all this booing under the podium in Monza. Great job Lewis and same for Kimi, two heroes who took us through a great day of sport! #SkyMotori @MercedesAMGF1 @LewisHamilton
