It won't and we won't (and I say that as someone who voted to remain). There will be seveal years of pain and adjustment. Then the difficulties will be overcome and things will go on as normal just without the pro's and con's of free movement etc. I'm not convinced the initial fuel delivery shortage was caused by Brexit although it does seem to be a factor in other delivery shortages. But in a few years salaries for drivers will rise back up again to levels they were before we joined the Common Market and UK drivers will be attracted back to the industry. Anyone who thought there would not be a period of pain and adjustment was deluded. It will come right in the end. But I'm still not convinced this particular issue is Brexit caused.

What’s more dangerous, transporting a trailer full of McDonalds ‘food’ and rolling out a few cages when you get to the other end or transporting a trailer full of highly flammable liquid and pumping it into some tanks when you get to the other end?

Im sure it’s fine 99.9% of the time but the consequences of getting it wrong can be rather catastrophic compared to some spilt milkshake.

Will we see driverless trucks in the next ten years that's the question, I know they already exist in the US but only for specific routes. It really is a problem that could be so brilliantly solved by tech.

Part of that BP leak that appears to have precipitated this crisis was that nationally their forecourt inventory levels were 25% below normal and they were unable to reverse declining inventories. Hence shutting sites to increase supplies to their remaining sites.

Esso reported problems at a small number of sites.

The rest of the sector we know nothing beyond their public statements of reassurance. While I am sure there is enough capacity nationally there are at minimum indications of stress and demand approaching capacity. These are the conditions in any industry where a hiccup can quickly snowball.

Where I live, two new Shell PS have opened less than 2 miles from each other in the past 18 months! Within 3 miles from my address, I have 3 Shells, 3 Essos, 1 BP, 1 Sainsburys and another (keeps changing names)
