It's snowing

For most of the UK summer (all season) tyres sre a reasonable choice. It is aligning your driving to your skill and equipment that is optimum.

To have winter tyres and bright headlights just encourages driving fast in poor conditions when everybody should just drive more slowly.

Tyre dealers would love it for everybody to have eight wheels with teo different tyre compounds on but the main thing is ensuring people have four wheels with more than minimum tread depth on them.

Have to agree for the majority of the UK. However i do like the fact that in Europe they do have the law and the space for a set of winter tyres especially in places that do get snow. Even a rwd car can manage well with winter tyres in snowy conditions.

It was snowing in central London a short time ago. It didn't last long but it was quite heavy for about 30 mins.

Looking out the window, the tiny bit of snow we had yesterday and this morning is rapidly melting, could well be it for this winter... Snow in Hampshire is pretty rare and rarer still for it to stay around for 24+ hours.

I was on the 14th floor at the time, looking over the Gherkin through massive floor to ceiling windows and it was like sitting in a snow globe, fantastic stuff.

Snow back on in Aberdeenshire. Just measured my outdoor table after I cut off the overhang, Measured at 19". We have been told we can expect a further 3-6" this afternoon/evening.

What a crock of rubish! Why wouldnt you try to be as safe as possible? Thats like saying motorcycle riders shouldnt wear helmets as it encourages them to ride faster.

I never wore one until they were compulsory and i rode at 100mph+ at times.

But my point stands.

Your point being that you would actively choose to put yourself at more risk than necessary?

My point bring that it is hugely expensive and impractical to require winter tyres on UK roads when the chances of driving through snow and ice are minimal throughout most of the year.

Yes those of us with garages could cope but we would be in a minority.

And you have answered your own question my safety is my resposibility and i would drive accordingly. What i did as a testosterone fuelled teenager in the nineteen sixties and seventies is something else. Less traffic zero cameras.

Anyway off topic now.

You do realise its perfectly pratical to run all season tyres all year, or infact just the colder months? They are significantly better at any temperature below about 10 degrees and also much better in wet weather. Its not about what speed you drive at, its about stopping distances when a child runs out in front of you, or someone doesnt indicate at a roundabout. They arent just for snow, that would be snow chains ....

My all seasons have been supurb in the snow we've had for the last 2 days, infact no different to driving on normal roads. Much better and safer when you're dropping your 4 year old off at school, knowing you can stop if you need too.
