It's hardly much effort to "bother". Download the app. Check everyday, if you like the free thing then download - if not, then don't.

Didn't last year but when I installed it it did ask for permissions to send messages so it might this year.

Do the iTunes publishers have their games on sale over Christmas like Steam? I have a list of games to buy but want to hold off in case they get reduced in price soon.

Doesn't take a lot for app publishers to hold a sale

Tend to be more common than Steam sales!
