Ivy fail

Most reviews seem to be getting 4.8Ghz. I dont think thats too bad, but id like to see 5GHz. Im holding out. DOnt think my i5 750 is at the point where it need to be replaced yet.
 
If overclocking is out what is the point of paying a premium for K and moreover a large premium to get loads of VRMs on your motherboard? The K devices are lacking certain features many of the other models have.

Where are the lower TDP parts? - if the problems are voltage related then this is where IB may come into it's own. Perhaps these are off to OEMs?

A huge portion of the silcion is given over to gfx. PCI 3.0 is not much use with onboard gfx is it?

The £250+ Core i7 3770K is meant to be quite good for HTPC use although it still has the 23.976 problem,and scores slightly higher than a £90 to £100 Llano A8. However,graphics performance is still worse. Going for a Llano A6 or for a CPU and a dedicated decode card like an HD6570 or GT440 is a better choice.

However,the main issue is this - the £160+ Core i5 3570K uses a lower clocked HD4000 IGP which means it will be worse for HTPC usage,and the rest of the Core i5 range will use the even worse HD2500 IGP.

The Core i3 3225 is meant to use a lower clocked HD4000 version but won't be out for months,and Trinity is launching next month.

I believe the diff, if any, is small; the i7 would not be a good choice given you are paying another £80 for very little. Not much has been said about it today but the full range includes S and T parts some of these will be better. Plenty of slides were around last year.

Yes, the HD4000 is well worth having and it's probably the only reason to go IB to be honest but if you're not playing games I would expect media playback to be OK with the HD2500.
 
Don't see how IB is fail tbh. Everything I expected and more (was expecting it to be more expensive tbh with bulldozer being a major flop intel own the cpu market). Also to improve on SB is a big task as the SB range is great.
 
IB was never meant to be that big an improvement to begin with anyway. Haswell will be where we see a slightly bigger improvement in performance if we are lucky.

The inherent issue that the Llano A6 and A8 CPUs are perfectly fine for media playback though and cost much less. The HD2500 is likely to score less than an HD4000 though and the cheaper IB CPUs won't be out for a while.

You could even get a Celeron G530 or a Pentium dual core and an HD6570 or GT440 for not more than £100 and still have a better HTPC experience.

With the Core i3 3225 months away and AMD replacing Llano with Trinity from next month onwards with an improved IGP,I suspect it will be a better value for money choice for an HTPC. I expect with the improvements in power gating and no L3 cache,they will have quite decent power consumption for media purposes.

OTH,the lower TDP of the CPU section of IB will be useful for my computer which is based around a mini-ITX motherboard. The Xeon E3 1230 V2 only has a 69W TDP.
 
At the current market price, Sandy Bridge is still the best value. But I have Z77 board, not sure to go with the new chip or just buy SB.
 
It is a fail. Going from 32 to 22 nm should increase maximum clock speeds and reduce temperatures, but neither of those have happened.
 
It is not a fail, but overall performance gains and overclocks are rather disappointing. Unless pricing is really aggressive, I will wait for the tock.
