So the general opinion is:

If you are looking for a moderate overclock (4.4-4.5), then IB is perfectly aceptable heat wise. (the I7 )

Or do we need to wait for "real-world" testing to confirm this?

If it cannot do 4.5 while staying realtively cool then i will most likely go for the 2600k on offer this week
 
its been said a thousand times now but this is how it is, need a new CPU? get IB, don't need a new CPU becuase you're still on SB or happy with you're previous chip be it 1156 or 1366 stick with it and wait out till the tock. Tick tock people, tick tock.

I'm one of those looking to upgrade from old tech (Q6600) but I'm not sure I want to wait for IB pricing to realise I should have taken advantage of the current 2600k offer plus 10% discount code - annoyingly I've just checked and Overclockers have just increased the price of the 2600k on 'This Week Only' from £209.99 to £221.99 :mad:
 
The Core i7-3770K was stable at 4.4-4.5GHz without so much as an extra millivolt applied to the CPU. Those speeds only increased system power consumption by a modest amount, so there's no need to invest in an aggressive cooling solution. With our single-fan Frio config, CPU temperatures were in the 50-60°C range under load.

It seems from that report at least that 4.5 is reachable.

Indecision is killing me here! I may order the other parts and wait for more reviews on IB and then decide on the CPU

Considering its a few days untill pricing, wait. If saving a few pennies is important there is no reason why you shouldnt wait to see price.

Shame about the price increase as i think i will wait to see what the pricing for IB is like now. I think i will order the rest of my system now though.

It could be a reasonable price difference. I do a reasonable amount of encoding and 3D CAD work so believe that I would benefit from HT. Currently £200 for a 2600k seems very tempting - 3770k seems to be rumoured anywhere between £240 - £280+.

I think I would be happier waiting if it was a toss up between the 2500k and 3570k...

Yeah, I'm doing two builds - one for me and one for my dad. I've got the basket full with the exception of the CPU's! I suppose I will be making a big saving with the 10% code so maybe worth heeding Sockky and others' advice and waiting for a bit...
 
What's this 10% offer?

I'm going to be upgrading form an e6300 so should be a worthwhile upgrade regardless of going SB or IB. The only potential difference I see is that IB setup will be a little more.
 
It is a fail. Going from 32 to 22 nm should increase maximum clock speeds and reduce temperatures, but neither of those have happened.

Physics disagrees with you.

IB: 1.4 billion transistors on a 160 mm² die at 77W TDP.
SB: 1.16 billion transistors on a 216 mm² die at 95W TDP.

IB: 77/160 mm² = 0.48W/mm²
SB: 95/216 mm² = 0.44W/mm²

Therefore IB needs to transfer more heat per mm² than SB does, hence it runs hotter given equal heatsink contact/ambient temps, etc etc etc.

Smaller transistors + hotter temps + new process + more design changes than usual = lower overclocks.

But as seen from the reviews, a 4.5GHz IB is ~ to a 4.8Ghz SB.

Seems like a decent step to me. Also quite happy the 3770K isn't faster than my W3680.
