James Cameron's 'Avatar' - The next gen of cinema

It's 100% CGI, that's the point isn't it?
Edit: Apparently not :p

Although, surely watching a film trailer designed entirely to be watched in 3d is useless on a regular screen?

That's the beauty of it all. This technology is revolutionising how we watch movies. He's developed new techniques. We are already seeing the release of 3D movies on DVD and soon our television will be in 3d.

Sky TV are trying to get it into mainstream - http://tv.sky.com/skys-3d-telly-news

I believe that this film will be used as the demo movie on new systems that feature 3D. I doubt this film will lose anything from being watched on a regular TV. We all love Aliens and Terminator 2 and those were not 3d.

I don't see Avatar as just a film, I see it as an introduction to the future not only in cinema but in our home.

Cinema here doesn't have 3d capabilities.
How does this new tech work? I've seen some tv's without the need for glasses..but that's different.

God will strike you down and give you AIDS.

:D :D :D

Not really. It's set on a planet. Planets happen to be in space. Earth is a planet in space for example. Are films set on Earth also somehow set in space?

No, they are not. :)

OK, so it's not set "in space". Though I guarantee you that some of the plot will take place "in space". It's not all set on a planet.

Watch HD trailer guys. It looks very plastic. Looks very 8 years ago. Very SW Ep 1. Clean, plastic, rendered for graphic card box picture. The scene where the guy rolls out of the ship onto the planet - it's like game cut scene. It even has motion blur applied. If it wasn't for good antialiasing and someone said it was from Crysis 2 it would fit perfectly. The aliens are just too plastic. Face mimics are way off, motion movement is overdone - many characters almost move like jar jar binks, body flow is odd and flexes like a dancing baby from 3d max demos. Looks like another director has finally lost that all necessary ability to judge what's well rendered and what's not.

Come on... game or what?

I watched the HD trailer, and that was my impression too.

Not to mention having James Cameron one of the most prolific and gifted Script writers/Directors.

He's not especially prolific at either, and while he is a talented director of action, his talents run out when he moves to any other other genre. As for his script-writing, watch Titanic again and then try to call him a talented script-writer again with a straight face.

For about the twentieth time, a trailer tells you nothing about how good a film is: remember everyone saying how good T4 looked in the trailers?

Thing is going by Cameron's track record with good films and introducing new tech I am confident that this will be a winner.

I've just clicked what that trailer reminds me off now, Final Fantasy: Spirits Within.

I really cant see why Titanic gets knocked the way it does, its grossed over $1.8 billion for a reason. I agree Action is what he does well, but personally I don't see anything cheesy/bad about his effort with Titanic.

Looking forward to this movie, although it will have a hell a lot of hype to live up to.

because lovesick girls were queueing up to see it time and time again, seriously so many girls went to see it as many times as they could afford. girls fall all over twilight, that doesn't make it a good film...

After watching the trailer, I have to agree that it does look rather 'game-like' in terms of its graphics. I think that this is intended though, and this is due to the uncanny valley. We were all told how it would be a new generation of film, and the CGI would allow all sorts of new stuff to be done, but at the same time they had to make a compromise in order to still make it watchable. I've seen demo videos demonstrating what can be done with CGI, and although they look lifelike, you can tell they're CGI and it makes it very hard to watch normally. This way, we all accept it is CGI, and watch it for what it is.

I guess I'm the only person who cares more about the plot, the script, the acting and direction, than the special effects?

M

Nope you're not... If the visuals are amazing, great, and if they still look like CGI, then so be it... All I want is a good solid inventicve Cameron story and piece of film making that we all know he's capable of producing!

I'm hoping this is Aliens meets The Abyss...

Undoubtably this film cannot live up to the hype, but if it's anywhere near the standard of his previous films - and I'm someone who really enjoyed The Abyss & Titanic - then who could want more than that!

Ummm...
Terminator
Aliens
The Abyss
Terminator 2
True Lies
Strange Days

Here we have some truly great scripts. In many of them the stories are almost flawless and more importantly we have some incredible characters with memorable strong dialog.

If you take just Aliens, it's a masterclass in script writing as well as film production! The Abyss, for all its effects and action, is reality is a great character lead love story. And T2, again is almost a perfect piece of writing (& film making).

OK, you didn't enjoy Titanic... Move on... There so many people sounding like a broken record regarding that film...

The outdoor environments and scenery look absolutely spectacular but the character animation still looks ropy...As it does in almost every other movie. I wish someone would nail it.

Btw, has the title of this movie and it's content got anything to do with that silly website that's been featured in a few documentaries? Other world, other life, true life....something like that?

Only watched the trailer once so far and that was in 1080p, and it looked really nice to me.

Although the big hype about the film is it's "revolutionary" 3d technology, so all of us aren't viewing it in the format it was intended for. Watching it in the cinema with the proper technology should give it an entirely different feel, especially if the 3d is as groundbreaking as it's claiming to be.

I do like the notion that this could be the beginning of something special.. A storytelling universe that we know nothing about that could go on to be as big as Star Wars.

Or it could just be a big flop.

I'll credit Terminator, Aliens and The Abyss as good movies. The rest were nothing to write home about. Cameron can be a good little workhorse on his day, but he has trotted out some pretty mediocre stuff.

Paying top dollar for a bunch of CGI in a movie with a plot which hugs the safe wall of Hollywood clichés isn't really groundbreaking stuff. It certainly brings nothing new to cinema. And if you still have to wear 3D glasses to watch it, what exactly is "revolutionary" about the technology?

More than likely. Technology has always been advancing, this is pure hype.

How is it pure hype? He has developed new camera technology and is using new motion capture techinques to allow real-time motion capture results to be viewed on virtual monitors?

Yes, technology progresses, but there are true advances being introduced here... So it's not really fair to dismiss is as 'pure hype'...
