January 9 Launch Date for AMD Radeon HD 7900

Not a Softpedia link, that's at least giving it some credibility. it looks almost certainly a Jan launch so, any time Jan sounds pretty realistic to me, personally I'd think earlier rather than later.

If there was more output from TSMC this could have launched a good while ago, a slip from December to Jan was always more likely to be a couple weeks rather than beginning Dec to end of Jan.

Most importantly, if there is a trade show anytime around a potential launch most companies use it as a launch date. CES starts on the 10th, so a AMD launch when all the reporters arrive in town the day before, and CES dominated from start to finish by AMD cards that are 50-60% faster than anything Nvidia have on show.......... I'd suggest that is the best possible time to launch for AMD ;)

I got 2x sapphire 6950 toxic back in august(tho still not up and running in xfire due to not having put the i2500k system together because of the motherboard issues), otherwise this would have been a good birthday present.

I hope this is true. My current setup of a pair of WC'd 480's is starting to have VRAM issues running games @2560x1600 If the rumours about 3GB cards being true I'll be first in line for a pair.

Would not even be worth it even if the card did operate on that pci bus.
would be bottlenecked to the HILT. The card would be starved beyond belief.

If he has a x16 PCI-E 1.0 slot then that's the equivalent bandwidth to a x8 PCI-E 2.0 slot.

Are you saying that there's no point in anyone with a x8/x8 PCI-E 2.0 board running the new cards in CrossFire?

Yeah Im running x16 PCI 1.0 slot......it should be fine for a while untill I save for a new board? As long its compatibal?

will this release (even if its paper) affect Nvidia's current prices by much ?

Some, not all, unknown amount, the 5870 came out while previously you could get 285gtx's for £250ish, maybe less, after the 5870 came out it went up to £350. Largely because Nvidia had very little stock left and they wanted there to appear to be stock for as long as possible so raising prices put most people off actually buying them.

In that situation Nvidia hoped to have 480gtx's on sale so stopped production on the 285gtx long before and got screwed, that is less likely to happen this time but then making 580gtx's to sell at £180-200 is also going to be pretty uneconomical............ it could go either way, crash in all Nvidia prices, or stopping most production and silly prices, or everything but the 580gtx crashing.

Personally I think you'll be looking at 560ti 2gb's at £150ish, and 570gtx under £200 at some point in January while the 580gtx gets a cut but not a huge amount.

I've just ordered a GTX 570 2.5GB for £289, would you say I should cancel my order given that they have just told me I won't be getting it before Xmas? (should be in stock on 23rd dec.)

Thanks,

G
