January Transfer Window 20/21

When you look at the turmoil and dodgy dealings behind the scenes with the people in charge of transfers who have come and gone in the last few years it’s not a surprise - fingers crossed now it’s just Edu and the Garlick guy we just hired to do the transfer paperwork things might be less of a farce.

Martin Odegaard on loan, supposedly - a viable alternative to rotate with ESR in midfield if it actually happens which is probably ideal because right now it's slightly early to call ESR a dead cert for the future of that position on the pitch but you wouldn't want to buy a fancy creative attacking midfielder and not be able to minutes to Smith-Rowe either.

Yes, which is why the club should think carefully about any signings in that position - delicate time where you need to give him minutes to keep developing, but not run him into the ground and leave him perpetually crocked like some of the other young players that never fulfilled the promise they showed early on.

Ornstein reckons it's 90% done albeit not finalised, and he's something of an unofficial mouthpiece for the club so things look positive on that front.

well that bloke from RM is the perfect solutiuon. ie get him on a 18month loan and play him 70% of the time and let ESR learn from him.

Although saying that, the RM bloke is only 2 years older lol

Signed boyhood Arsenal fan Mat Ryan on loan from Brighton - should be a better backup keeper than the current disaster.

Its weird how many players become boyhood fans of clubs they join. When Ryan was at Club Brugge 5 years ago, he was linked with Liverpool and gave an interview where he said he was a boyhood Liverpool fan. Its amazing how many players join Chelsea/Utd/Spurs/Arsenal/Liverpool and then say they were boyhood <insert new clubs name here> fans.

Tbf when he was a kid in Australia we would have been an easy choice to support (Henry and Bergkamp days, exciting to watch), so I'll go with it - innocent until proven guilty and all that - and in any case he's just a better back-up choice than Rúnarsson and ideally he'll make next to no appearances.

Yet Brighton don’t think he’s good enough for backup.

This means little in reality; all managers have their philosophies, preferred traits and players. Perhaps it's a style thing, perhaps Potter has seen something extra in Sanchez, I don't know the ins and outs. Ryan has been around this league for years and has been a solid Prem keeper throughout. He is easily better than what Arsenal have in that squad position and arrives with little to no risk. He offers able short-term cover with, I would assume, the possibility of a cost-effective deal if he does fit Arteta's requirements. At worst, it removes some of the risk for the next 5 months.
