January Transfer Window 2012/2013 Season Rumours/Signings

Anderson, Berbatov, Bebe, Veron, Hargreaves? I'm sure there are loads more. =D

Bebe and Veron perhaps, but a bit harsh on the other 3 who have all contributed in one way or another despite not setting the world on fire.

I could sort of understand the Taarabt story if he'd had a blinder on Saturday but he was utterly rubbish and moody from start to finish.

Was about to say the same, I personally liked Veron as well. Bloodshot's an Arsenal supporter aint he?..... ;) :p

Fergie does seem to have an odd strategy of buying up high potential younger players in the hopes that they turn into another Ronaldo though, when most turn out to be flops. I can't think of any other way to explain the Bebe signing.

Not that United are the only club to do that, but they seem to pay well over the odds for certain players like that I'v noticed. Clubs like Chelsea/Liverpool/Arsenal seem to get those sorts of players in on the cheap. It looks to me like as soon as United start sniffing around a player the price goes up straight away.

Anderson was a prospect, Berbatov was arguably world class (and proven in the BPL), Bebe admittedly wrong, Veron arguably world class and Hargreaves was a quality player that turned injury ridden.

More please.

No thanks, this has no place in this transfer thread. It's the usual bile brought up again and again. This is for discussing 2012/13 transfers and rumours, not doing post mortems on years of transfer history.

Veron was a class player before and after he left England (and a handful of games in between), unfortunately he didnt really work out for Utd or Chelsea (but at least Chelsea only paid 1/2 the cost that Utd did)

Man Utd have been overcharged for every transfer since I can remember, and it will only continue to happen when the new shirt deal /kit deal kick in during 2015 or so.

The only way Utd get good deals most of the time is through selling the occasional super-star (or kids from the accademy really prospering).

Most of those named where good transfers, with a couple of unlucky circumstances thrown in for good measure (Hargreaves and his knees, and Berba not really working out)

edit - Usual speculation for Jan, very few of which will ever happen at all let alone in Jan '13

I thought nearly £20m was paid for Anderson? You don't pay that much for a "prospect" I'm afraid.

Er, yes you do.

Turned injury ridden? :D

You do realise that Hargreaves always was a crock and missed nearly the entire season before joining Utd.

This is true, but no-one was to know how it would turn out. Plenty of players have a year out and come back as fit as before these days.

Rodgers has confirmed (again) that he'll have cash to spend in January but that he hopes to bring 1 or 2 players in on loan too.

It wasn't just that year though. The year previous to that was only very slightly better and given that Bayern were playing 55-60 games per season, to have only once managed 40+ games in a season was a poor return.

Throw in the fact that he wasn't that great anyway and I can't see how anybody could argue that ~£20m on Hargreaves was wisely spent.

To be honest who cares whether SAF has bought duds, every club buys a heap of duds, sometimes over the odds. Sometimes you get lucky and the prospect turns good, scores a load of goals and is sold for a profit. Football isnt a normal business in that you are not buying diamonds of a known quality, you are buying talent which is very unpredictable and subject to environmental conditions.

OT: chelsea need to invest in some quality up front. No doubts. The only real guaranteed diamond atm for chelsea would be falcao. But he wont leave so they need to be creative. Can see drogba coming back for a good chunk of the season for those reasons.

Ronaldo to United - £12.24M
Rooney to United - £25.6M

Ronaldo probably isn't the best example in financial terms but Rooney definitely. Look at Hazard to Chelsea! Young and unproven but definitely a prospect for the future.

Any player signed at a relatively young age is regarded as a prospect but you've also got to take into account their current ability too. Anderson wasn't (nor has he become) nearly as good a player as Rooney was when he signed nor nearly as good as Hazard is now either.

Potential alone isn't (or at least shouldn't be) enough to warrant paying a huge fee.

Rooney and Hazard had already been quality at a good level.

Carroll and Henderson cost a fair bit and were nothing more then prospects.

Unfortunately you do end up paying a lot of money for young promising players.
