January Transfer Window 2017/18

Aubameyang is at Arsenal's training ground. You'd think it has to be going ahead now.

Why?? He’s not tall enough for them, they want a tall lanky striker as they put a lot of balls in the air.

Perhaps they should look at Crouch if they want someone tall lol b

Aubameyang is 6'2~. Not particularly short.

Dzeko is 6'4 but he's not known for being good in the air.

I suppose what I found strange was the way some of the press started on £300k a week, and went up to £600k, then back down again. Totally inconsistent and it's clear a number of them were making it up as they go along (which isn't a surprise). Then again, with no transfer fee to focus on it was bound to happen, and yes it's more expensive than your average signing, but top level players are always on pretty big contracts.

Not sure why City don't just play Bernardo Silva instead of signing Mahrez? For all of Pep's moral grandstanding he's just spent £57m on a defender and possibly £60m~ on Mahrez...

I know we've spent a lot of money too and badly but they are starting to take it to a new level now (which is fair enough, but don't plead poverty :p).

Leicester are holding out for £90m+ based on what Coutinho went for, I can't see anyone paying close to that, Mahrez isn't that good.

Wow, wasn't expecting confirmation of that until later. Good signing but ultimately it's not what Arsenal need (as a priority), should be good to watch though.

I think Wenger is concerned there aren't enough match winners in the squad.

We only had one which was Sanchez.

We do need to buy defensive players tho. A world class DM would be nice to replace Elneny in the starting line-up.

Yes, in fairness Lacazette has been patchy, so I do think it's a very good signing, but whatever his goal return, defensively and mentally the team looks very weak.

Arsenal don't need a world class striker?, so we fine with average like Welbeck and Giroud.

I do think we need a DM more so but Im not complaining about this signing.

As above, yes I suppose you do.

For sure, I mean Xhaka is completely clueless, I really don't know why Wenger keeps playing him, I guess he needs to justify the £35m he spent on him. defensive areas are number 1 priority now, I think this will be strengthened in the Summer.

As I said in the match thread last night, I've noticed him strolling around just before Arsenal concede a goal a few times, he's complete garbage.

I assume Wenger will try and fit both Auba and Lacazette into the team, with Ozil feeding them both. Good potential there, but the rest of the team is patchy. Cech has lost it now too.

Özil’s contract is worth £60m. He’s now in his absolute prime for a creative midfielder and is without doubt one of the worlds best in his particular role. Tell me where you could buy a player of Ozils ability in his prime for £60m? Can’t do it these days. I dread to think what he would be worth now if he was still at Real, popping in assists for Benzema and Ronaldo left, right and centre.

While I rate him, he often goes missing and doesn't affect games as he should. I tend to put that down to the rest of the Arsenal midfield being pretty poor though to be fair.

This has definitely been one of the more interesting January transfer windows.

I think Mahrez will probably go by the sound of it, he's desperate and Leicester won't want to decline this sort of money and have an unhappy player. He agreed to stay another year last summer to see if they can grow the club and they haven't, but they'll be ok without him.

Ornstein said there are 'whispers' that Arsenal want David Luiz or Manolas from Roma. The latter would probably be better, Luiz is good but always a potential liability.

I have also said before that Pogba is generally thought of as being best in a midfield 3. He hasn't developed enough discipline to play in a midfield 2, it seems. That's not to say we should write it off completely just yet. It's also worth pointing out that he had highly experienced, quality midfielders around him at Juventus - Pirlo/Marchisio/Vidal.

Carragher and Neville covered it well last night on The Debate. What Mourinho has to do now is find out his best system in the remaining games this season, like Pep did in the second half of last season. Meaning he'll know if anything needs changing in the summer and the team will be used to the new system for the start of next season.

Reports that Madrid are coming after Pogba as he’s unhappy at United. At least it will end up being for profit. You can understand why Pogba might hate playing such football. Then again he might just be trying to get a pay rise after hearing what Sanchez is on.

Pogba hasn't been playing well and looked upset on the bench, but beyond that it's likely just guesswork from the papers.

That said, there do seem to be problems between him and Mourinho, they will need resolving quickly or it's not good news. The issue seems to be that Mourinho wants him to be able to play in a 2, which requires a lot more discipline, and Pogba wants a free role as box to box (like at Juventus), meaning he has to play in a 3.
