Mr Abe was shot from the back and collapsed halfway during his speech, and appeared to be bleeding, broadcaster NHK reported. His attacker is in custody, it added.
Ex-Tokyo governor Yoichi Masuzoe said in a tweet that Mr Abe was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest.
The term is often used before a death is officially confirmed in Japan.
Mr Abe, who was Japan's longest-serving prime minister, stepped down in 2020 citing health reasons. He later revealed that he had suffered a relapse of ulcerative colitis, an intestinal disease.
He was succeeded by his close party ally Yoshihide Suga, who was later replaced by Fumio Kishida.
Incidents of gun violence are rare in Japan, where handguns are banned.

Well didn't see the coming and currently wondering if China might be involved but more likely to be something personal. Maybe the doomsday cult is back and this is their opening salvo?

From initial information seems more personal - apparently the person who did it just waited around to be arrested so doesn't sound like state sponsored/professional hit.

Doesn't look good. From the video footage it looks like he was shot in the back with a sawed off double barrel and went into cardiac arrest at the scene. Looks like they had to use defibrillator on him and he was bleeding from the mouth..

He has now sadly passed away according to their media, can't imagine how the people of Japan are handling this as it's just so unsettling.

For example the outcry and mourning for Kyoto Ani Animation studio massacre was huge so i imagine a long term ex PM will prob be a weeks mourning. The Japanese culture around death and passing is very big and very respectful

Handguns are banned but shotguns aren't?
Clay pigeon shooting shotguns aren’t banned in Japan, they’re just very difficult to get permits for and are kept secured at the shooting ground IIRC.

If the weapon used is a cut-down sporting shotgun, a gun club is just about to get ripped apart and the armoury staff are going to prison.

Looking at video of them tackling the guy to the ground on bbc news this photo of the guy in the background in green clothes looks like the suspect.
