Japan ex-PM Abe assassinated in shooting

The title needs changing to assassinated I guess. RIP Shinzo Abe :(

As for the guy who did it, capital punishment still exists doesn't it in Japan? Guess he will be hanged, least it won't be a burden on Japan feeding someone and giving them shelter for the next 50ish years.

A quick death seems like mercy to me.

Looking at video of them tackling the guy to the ground on bbc news this photo of the guy in the background in green clothes looks like the suspect.

That is the guy, and this is his homemade gun:

I like the way the assassin wears a mask and follows good health and safety procedures. Must be galling to see for all the anti gun aficionados, but where there's a will there's a way :(

Not really, Japan is one of the safest countries in the World in terms of violent crime.

Which doesn't mean that occasionally horrible crimes aren't committed.

RIP Shinzo.

They've had some pretty 'out there' attacks such as sarin gas attacks on subways, but I would feel safer walking around a Japanese city than some British ones...

Being anti-proliferation of ballistic arms doesn't mean it's impossible as where there's a will there is always a way.

The fact that his gun was homemade just proves that Japan's gun regulation works and that the failing was lax security measures partly brought about by hubris over those gun regulations. I suspect this is a mistake they won't be making again.

Video out there showing he missed the first shot and there was a good few seconds between that and the second fatal shot from point blank. Feel like the security team failed somewhat.

Can't help but think that world leaders might be feeling on edge after this and become even more paranoid about their domestic risks than they already were especially under current less than ideal economic circumstances. What ought to be a domestic Japanese concern has undoubtedly sent a shockwave of unknown consequence around the world.

RIP.

Not having the state (your taxes) subsidise scum for the rest of their lives seems like a mercy to taxpayers to me. I don't care if its a mercy to the criminal or not. I know blah blah blah, how can you be absolutely sure they're guilty for other cases. But for cases like this where it's 100% certain he's guilty. Life in jail for them is a joke.

East Asian countries have been wearing masks since even before the pandemic. Obviously not to the extent now, but it's really not been some polarising, "up-in-arms" subject or peculiar thing to see the same way it has in the West.

I don't think this is really a kick in the teeth for anti-gun people either. Many of the news articles are specifically mentioning how safe Japan normally is, and how strict their gun policies are. As a result, this particular story is being reported as a shock and an extremely rare case. Meanwhile in America, you have mass shootings literally every other week, the last being on the wonderfully patriotic national holiday of Independence Day. Sooo a nation with strict gun laws = shootings are an extreme rarity. A nation with lax gun laws = mass shootings aplenty. I don't really get how that is galling?
