Japanese Grand Prix 2013, Suzuka - Race 15/19

All the top teams push the rules to the limits, it is the very nature of the sport.

I think people need to distinguish between cheating and pushing the boundaries of the rules.

It's the nature of F1, Williams were dominant prior to Senna joining because of the active suspension and traction control. When it was banned Senna could not cope with Msc in the Benneton so rumours were thrown around that the Benneton still had traction control [ not sure if it was ever proved one way or the other]. Throw enough **** and some will stick , so it's what teams do.

You have to push it to the limit because if you dont, you can be damn sure your competition is. You just have to make sure you do it better.

Please fully star out all swearing in future. Thank you.

Sparky, I have a view that Red Bull are a bit more dynamic when it comes to putting parts on the car, they have more of a gut feeling that something is right and then it is fine tuned.

As I have said before, in my opinion McLaren spend hours crunching numbers, CFD and the wind tunnel etc, the computer says the part is good and then they put it on the car only to find out that it makes no difference.

r.

Always thought this was proven after the end of that season......

Not sure because I would assume they would have been stripped of their points.

maybe I shoudl have said "well after the end of that season" - ie when nobody could have done anything about it.

Just like MS being stripped of his points in .....97? - was it really an effective detriment.....not really imo, it meant squat

In Winter 2012, clearly things didnt go well.
Hamilton must've seen what was to come and left.
McLaren responded by replacing a top line driver with Perez (this shows the team have now lost their ambition).
They start 2013 badly and continue the season in the same way. No forward movement. This suggests that they are either bad at developing the car (which I do not believe) OR they are not taking enough risks.

They had the opportunity this year to weigh in and attempt to destabilize and possibly hire either Kimi or Alonso. They got neither. I dont think they even made an attempt to hire them.

Ferrari on the other hand want to win at any cost. They already have a top line driver. But at the risk of ruffling feathers, they have got themselves another top line driver. Some have said that Kimi/Alonso pairing is one of the strongest pairing ever.

Since 2013, McLaren have shown no evidence of a team which has ambitions to win the title. They appear to be hoping that their design team comes up with a car which 0.5s faster than everybody elses...but the chances of this happening are slim.

To win the title, they need a top line driver. Perhaps they accept that they are not good enough to offer a top driver a decent drive. Who knows.

I understand where you are coming from - but imo McLaren need to get their engineering team back after losing 2 or 3 in the last few seasons and from reports thats exactly what they are doing.

You can have two 1st rate drivers, but if you still have a 2nd rate car (especially with aero being so dominant now) its not going to make a blind bit of difference.

Wiki

During the 1994 season, some rival teams claimed Benetton had found a way to violate the FIA-imposed ban on electronic aids, including Traction Control and Launch Control. On investigation, the FIA discovered "start sequence" (launch control) software in the Benetton B194 cars, and a variety of illegal software in rival teams' cars as well. FIA had no evidence the software was ever used, so teams found with the software received little to no punishment. No traction control software was found to be in the Benetton cars, however. Flavio Briatore, Benetton's chief in 1994, said in 2001 that "Our only mistake was that at the time we were too young and people were suspicious"

Doesn't really look to good on the FIA that season but, it does say they found similar "software" on other teams cars, I guess proving it was used was pretty difficult.

Exactly. Everyone has the ability to cheat, but they have to be prooved to have actually done so to receive punishment.

You can't go round banning people based on accusations.

No but, as I said earlier, throw enough **** and people will start to believe it.

Some of the stuff people come out with is so interesting I wish it was real. The Ferrari mercury switch activated electronic paint was one of my favourates.

Whether its hardware or software - Im not sure why anyone would have anything on their car that they are not using. Asking for trouble imo

Not to mention everything else Benetton especially pushed the rules on that season (like the fuel filter, the black flag incident and several other things)
