Japanese Grand Prix 2014, Suzuka - Race 15/19

It's horrifying to see something as massive and weighty as a Caterpillar truck getting lifted off the ground like that. Such a massive impact :/

It's horrific indeed but it's worth remembering that the f1 car itself is effectively providing a lot of force itself so it wouldn't take quite as much force as you would think to lift the back end up and cause it to pivot around on it's front wheels as it did.

In fact if the cat hadn't tilted forward a little and lifted up at the back on first impact the car may not have gotten through/under it, had the F1 car not been suspended at the time of impact it could have been even worse.

The marshall with the rope attached to Sutil's car attempting to help control it, had he not looked around seen it coming and gotten out of the way Sutil's car could easily have hit or fallen on top of him.

That's a huge impact to move that Loader like that. Surprised by the speed he was travelling.

Not good at all. :(

Having watch that video it's pretty much exactly how I thought it happened but I didn't think so much of the car would've gone under the recovery vehicle. Thought it could've been the engine flap from the recovery vehicle that removed the top of the car but someone pointed out that was intact, but **** me that's bad.

Might sound harsh but I'll reserve judgment as to whether he's lucky to be alive or not until we know what state he's in/been left in :(

Have we discussed closed cockpits in this thread yet? If not what do we think would have happened if Jules had a closed cockpit canopy on the car when it hit the tractor?

I wonder how much different the damage to him would have been...

Smedley article on how easy he says they would be to implement...

Personally I'm well against the closed cockpit canopy aesthetically speaking, Formula 1 cars are traditionally famous for being open cockpit and I just think it looks cooler this way, but from a safety point of view and well being for the drivers I'm 100 percent for it if they are going to protect drivers from injury or worse.

I don't mind closed cockpit, I don't know what the appeal is with open cockpit is. It's not like a traditional car where you'll be unable to see what the driver is doing. And we've got inside cockpit cameras know anyway.

Just watched that video...Holy **** :(

I wasn't aware that the Tractor was reversing at the time... if it had started reversing a few seconds earlier that could have been instant death. Geeze.

Hitting the tractor destroyed the roll hoop, which is one of the strongest parts of an F1 chassis. A closed canopy would have offered little to no added protection in this case.

Even if the Tractor hadn't been there that would have been an unbelievable impact on the barrier.

If anything it could have squashed the canopy downwards and made it worse?
