Japanese Grand Prix 2015, Suzuka - Race 14/19

Any quotes for those of us who missed it?

Vettel made a joke, if you remember the jokes made earlier this year. I think Rosberg said he wanted Ferrari closer and Vettel made a few comments then it got super awkward with Rosberg. It was kind of like that, Vettel made a joke about running low again, meaning pressures. Rosberg didn't get the joke and it got all weird and awkward.

Rosberg just is weird and awkward, he couples almost nothing at all interesting about his personality with no sense of human and making conversations insanely awkward.

He in theory does, but he also kinda doesn't.

He has a 1 year + 1 year extension contract. It's just Ron wording it to make it sound like JB has a contract for next year.

Button had a contract with Williams for 2005.
Alonso had a contract with McLaren for 2008 and one with Ferrari for 2015.

Contracts mean squat.

It seems that JB's contract was for 2 years, not 1 + 1. The option was therefore not to extend it but to cancel it, and Ron's just confirmed that they're not exercising the option.

Of course, Jenson probably still can if he wants to walk away.

No matter how poor a year this season has been, it is no way to go out. They may not be championship material next year but they should be more competitive. This year will have been a complete waste if he doesn't stay to see if he can capitalise on next. I know it always sounds like jam tomorrow, but why not give it one last go.

Button has a contract for 2016 but McLaren have an option to terminate it before 30 September.
Dennis said: "We have two drivers. We want both of them in the team and it is as simple as that. We will have a winning team."
He added: "Jenson has a two-year contract. It has an option to stop. I told Jenson - probably too late - that we have no intention of exercising the option [to cancel his contract]. I told him on Thursday, probably I should have told him on Tuesday."

The way I read it is that next year with McLaren is up to Jenson. The team have the option and want to keep him but it's whether he wants to stay. Technically he has to drive if they opt to keep him but they can't really force him if he doesn't want to.

I think he feels there's nothing left for him in F1. Even if he drives next year, the McLaren is still going to be fairly hopeless and he's almost certain to be dropped for 2017 anyway. It thus becomes a question of whether the money they offer him is enough for him to tool around at the back for another year or whether he's had enough and jumps ship to WEC or somewhere else next year.

It won't matter, two sponsors, Santander and another one I can't remember, are said to be pulling out at the end of the year. Considering their current lack of time on air due to not finishing half the races and being off the back of the pack 90% of the race it's not going to be a big sponsor is it. If they are really lucky they will get someone to match the money they'll lose at the end of the year, more realistically they will just offset some of those loses as I'd be surprised if anyone wants to pay the same this year as deals that started when they were regularly getting podiums.

No idea why people are talking about contracts, in sport retiring = get out of contract clause that appears generally unbeatable. There are going to be few if any courts that force someone to drive a car dangerously fast in a sport that can kill people if the driver no longer wants to. What Ron can probably do is demand a large buyout fee if another team wanted him or make things difficult if Button tried to come back again after retiring. Though his contract would be up by 2017 I'm sure Ron could sue him for basically pretending to retire to get out of his contract. More likely in agreeing to terminate the contract there will be a deal agreed with clauses about not being able to race again or some fee being due if he does try to come back.

Isn't the other sponsor Johnny Walker? I remember reading somewhere that they pay in the region of 14m (can't remember currency) and that their departure would be a smack in the face for Dennis as, a few year back, they offered 43m to become title sponsors and he turned them down, saying it wasn't enough.

Yeah, I was thinking booze, I have a real knack of ignoring advertising completely. I knew it was booze and without looking up an image of the car I couldn't remember who their booze guys are, effective advertising :p

I think Santander isn't much and it's supposed to be around 20mil a year together. Still as I highly doubt they've got a title sponsor on big money being signed I doubt if a new sponsor will make up for losing that 20mil a year. They are getting less and less each year from constructors championship as well as they slip into oblivion. They finished 5th last year and probably got in the region of 45-50mil for that, coming second last they'll be closer to 25mil, so that is yet another loss in income.

Was Lucozade not with McLaren?

It was incredibly dull :(

It's getting to the point where I'm not even looking forward to them anymore, maybe if McLaren were podium contenders it'd be a bit different cos obv Button... but even then today's race was just a bloody train... and when a driver catches up to one in front and you start rubbing your hands together to see some battling the one in front just pits. Awfully dull. Hope the next race is half dry and half rain or just full on rain - needs something to mix it up more than this.

Yes, I was thinking that... and still. It makes Martin Whitmarsh look awesome.

Sadly I haven't watched the last few F1 weekends. As it is always a Mercedes that is on pole, wins or a Ferrari sometimes wins.

What is the point to watch this when you more or less know the result with no wheel to wheel action.
