It'll be interesting to hear how close to the 5% limit for the 'minor' infraction they are. That's still possibly a whopping $7.25m.

If other teams really did have to lay off staff to meet the cap, then the FIA should throw the book at Red Bull for disregarding it.

Red Bull laid off over 50 people due to the budget cap changes, so just as many if not more than other teams, I have multiple friends who work there (wasn't a pleasant time for anyone I imagine, in any teams affected).

I've seen former Red Bullers on Twitter angry that Red Bull laid off staff to meet the cap and still didn't.

It’s definitely a less than ideal situation for all involved.

I still haven’t decided how I feel about a cap. On one hand it completely makes sense, on the other F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of engineering and motorsport and I quite liked that people could pursue excellence at all costs. I find the machines themselves just as fascinating as the racing.

Not that it matters now, as there is a cap, so it’s end of really.

Yeah I actually agree with that. But other sports have had problems with unlimited funds haven't they? Don't the big US sports have salary caps? F1 is probably worse than other sports in that more money = much bigger difference on the track. Whereas for example you can spend XX on a footballer but it doesn't guarantee you the wins.

Yeah, American sports use a more complex cap structure, which includes players wages etc too. I do like the draft system they implement though, the two systems work in tandem quite well to keep things relatively level, within reason anyway. Suppose it’s slightly different as they’re mostly on field/court teams, whereas F1 is unique, in that it’s huge teams behind the scenes but with only 2 drivers actually on track (and mechanics I suppose).

It’s a difficult one for this type of motorsports for sure, I’m torn. I mainly just miss huge V10 engines though really. :p

To penalize Redbull for going over by giving only penalties to damage them financially, is the very definition of pay to win. It completely brings the sport into disrepute and is unacceptable on so many levels. The whole point in the budget cap is then written off and it sticks the proverbial middle finger up to any teams that came in under the cap. The very core of F1 is broken then. The FIA are not fit for purpose.

This. Financial penalties to breaking the budget cap are clearly stupid and illogical.

IF all they get is a fine, why wouldnt the teams with endless money like Merc and Ferrari just make sure they only break the budget cap by under 5% and then just take the fine.

And that is why I will stop watching f1 altogether if fia do not apply to correct penalty

I'm going to laugh when they announce a fine of like £1 million or something like that. Red Bull will be like: "lol, we made far more than that by winning the championship two years in a row".

If Redbull and AM accept the judgement, as far as I'm aware points can't be docked - so the only punishments are fines (I'm assuming a decent amount, but still - yes not massively damaging for a company like RB) and missed "events" but these can't include races. So free practice basically?

This isn't correct. The ABA rules don't allow for it, but the panel can decide whether or not to allow an ABA to be used.
