They paid a lot to bring Top Gear back, and it was Clarkson that they wanted as he was from the original series.

Actually it was Clarkson who pitched new Top Gear to them, they had no desire to bring TG back, but he showed them the success he had had with his home videos and other shows and convinced them to let him do new Top Gear as entertainment with that style of format.

If Top Gear does get canceled I wonder how many staff will eventually lose their jobs plus all the staff that are kept in jobs by the export money?

Probably not many.

Most will be contractors being picked up for individual jobs. The production team will be permanent but the technical guys will generally be picked up as and when required.

Their office isn't huge.

No-one is kept in a job by the export money, whilst it sells well there aren't any BBCW roles that are related directly to Top Gear or rely on it exclusively (possible a photographer as TG didn't bother employing one BBCW had to get one to capture stills for promotional material).

So it comes to light that Clarkson was the one who informed BBC bosses about the altercation himself. No complaint has been made by anyone.
