The BBC are not for profit, if they lose revenue, they have to stop doing things to balance the books.

Top gear brings in many millions in profit for the BBC, which is then used to fund other things, people work on these other things.

If Top gear were not to exist, then these millions would disappear from the BBC budget, the things the millions are used to fund would disappear, and the jobs of the people working on them would disappear.

Its really quite simple.

Put way better than myself :D

The amount of millions that would be lost is debatable though. A lot of the Top Gear money is made from licensing the brand around the world, various side projects, and selling rights to show older episodes. This revenue stream will not suddenly dry up if Clarkson goes.

Also, the BBC budget is around £5bn a year. Top Gear's total value makes up around 1% of that.

While we wait here is some Jeremy Clarkson Memes to remind us why we like him.

Thank you for that :D

The ugliest ******** that couldn't even be recreated on Minebox.

If you're having to insert numbers to get round the swear filter then it's worth considering you shouldn't be using the word on here.

Perhaps, but with licensees dropping, the BBC cant be picking and choosing its most highly value produce.

Just more reason that the BBC is not working as intended.

So sky news reporting that it wasn't physical at all, JC swore at and threatened to get the producer sacked for not doing his job properly because there was no hot food supplied.

The BBC is going to be the laughing stock of the world in the next 24-48 hours it appears.

If they have cancelled their biggest earnings show an risking numerous legal challenges from around the world because 2 long time work colleagues had an argument is going to be toe curlingly excruciatingly embarrassing.

They might have got themselves covered:

An executive at an insurance broker specialising in the media industry suggested that the BBC may have ensured that Clarkson would be liable for any loss of its earnings from Top Gear. It was common for broadcasters to insure against the loss of production expenses when a celebrity goes “rogue”. Edel Ryan, of JLT Speciality, said: “Broadcasters have to consider the options available to them to protect their liability in this area.”

Beeb have sent a letter..

Clarkson has been sent a letter summoning him to a disciplinary hearing. Lord Hall of Birkenhead, the BBC director-general, indicated yesterday that the presenter will come face to face with Mr Tymon during the inquiry. It is being overseen by Ken MacQuarrie, the BBC executive who handled the inquiry into a Newsnight investigation that falsely accused a Conservative peer of a child abuse scandal.

Lord Hall said: “We have to get the people who are impacted by this together. There is a lot of speculation. We have got to establish the facts and I intend to do that before we come to a final decision.”

Maybe they should televise it. What an audience that would have... :p
