Job

I am a Distributed Systems Technician

Company

Surrey Uni

Day to day

Varies every day, at the moment though (over the next month or so) I'm setting up loads of laptops and sending them out to the users (staff here at the uni).

Overall Job

Loads of different roles to be honest, basically I'm an IT techie with a fancy name. :)

Perks

Large amount of admin control over the systems, unlimited internet usage, very relaxed environment, casual clothing..ie Jeans and a tshirt.

Downsides

Having to spend time with idiotic users that can't work a PC and get annoyed because they broke it and expect it to be fixed in seconds. Also where I live currently is a downside, I have to get up at 6 to get in just after 9 (mean to be in at 9).

Education?

I'm on placement from Bournemouth Uni, so still educating and also have a few courses I can do here. :)

Do you like your job?

Yup I love it.

Job: Technical Manager

company: Rather not say...

Perks
Fully expensed company car - Nissan Navara
Fully expensed company phone
€10 lunch allowance per day tax free

Downsides
Mostly to do with how the company is run, and the fact that I'm expected to do quite a lot of hours extra, for no extra pay.

Education?
485 points in Irish leaving cert out of a maximum of 600. went on to get BEng in Mechanical engineering in UCD.

Do you like your job?
Not really, no. It pays well though.

Job

Business Systems Analyst/Developer

Company

Large asset management firm in the city, then in 5 weeks moving to an alternative investments firm (hedge funds) also in the city.

Day to day

Finishing up a mirrored funds project (6 months Scrum development), latest technology, Biztalk, .Net 3.5, SQL 2005, WCF, etc...

day to day depends on what phase of development we're in, "sprint" phase will be 7am-7pm coding, review would revert to 8am-4pm

Overall Job

Pretty good/interesting and varied work - moving on to expand my business knowledge and because I've been where I currently am for 8 years and I fancied a change.

Perks

Non-contrib pension, car, healthcare, gym, cheap loans/mortgages, life insurance, etc - the usual stuff I guess.

Downsides

None really, the sprints are long days, but are few and far between - and the 4pm finishes outside of the sprints make up for it.

Education?

BA(Hons) Systems Analysis
MCP/MCAD/MCSD.Net

Do you like your job?

Hell yes.

Salary

Depends on the bonus(es) - a good year will be into 6 figures, a bad year will be less than half that...

Job

Own 2 Company's ( well there under the parent company but 2 sites ( soon to be 3 ) selling completely different products.

Company

Can not self advertise and my products overlap with OCUK

Day to day

At the moment all i do really is have a chat to my suppliers and see whats hot and not and get prices lists. Also at the moment i am answering customer emails as where currently implementing new help desk software and until then i answer them although i find it very stressful for some reason ?

Overall Job

I Don't really do anything really , im off for the holidays and then start uni in October. As above i just spend a hour or so a day chatting with suppliers and i pay them twice a week. My staff do everything else.

My staff consists of 2 Full time Managers these run the business make sure everything is smooth , answer emails and make sure the part time staff are going everything correctly. I have 4 Part time packers as well who work 2-3 hours a day.

Perks

Lots of money for doing very little , lots of free time.

All my staff are either Family or Close Friends , and it makes me feel better inside that i can make a difference in there lives. an example = my mum she works 38 hour a week as a registered mental nurse and makes £1600 / month , but working around between 7-14 hours hours a week for me she makes £2010 a month minimum after tax and this can increase by a large amount depending on the number or orders. So it makes me feel proud to be able to pay my mum back and my other family members for everything.

Downsides

Its Very boring, i just spend all day on msn and on the forums with nothing to do but this should be ok once uni starts. Also i may be making a lot of money but theirs no one i can enjoy it with an example of this is i offered to pay for my mates to come on holiday all they needed where spending money for a week but none of them could afford it because there all students.

Education?

A levels in :

History , Business , Economics , Media

going to uni to do business management and economics

Do you like your job?

Yep its great and hopefully it continues to grow

Job - Property Officer for a Police force.

Pros - Varied work in a pleasant environment, one day you maybe out in the van collecting evidence from scenes of crime, the next you could be pricing items up for auction. Every day brings a new challenge and im never sat at a desk for 8 hours a day. Also have unofficial access to all the seized property before it gets dumped. Basically this means free booze, cigs or anything else that maybe on the pile for that day. Working in a Police station is quite an exciting environment also. Always something going on and you are always meeting new people and have quite a strong link to most Police departments and all ranks of officer. I also have flexitime and can pick what hours I want to work to suit me and management just leave us alone to do our own thing so there is no pressure environment. Public sector also provides me with job security also and the range of jobs within the Police I can be promoted to is very large and varied. The pension scheme is also one of the best you can be on.

Cons - Exposed to quite a lot of disturbing stuff as in illegal pornography, blood soaked weapons and clothing, items retrieved from suicides etc. The smell of cannabis also seems to be everywhere, in fact you smell a lot of things that literally make you feel ill. The work can be quite physically demanding also. The pay isnt brilliant, its by no means minimum wage but for the work I do im not sure the pay mirrors that.

Overall im very happy in my job.

EDUCATION: PharmD at the very minimum

DO YOU LIKE YOUR JOB: yes

Job

I am a Trainee Air Traffic Controller

Company

I work for a company called NATS (http://www.nats.co.uk/) which is the company that provides the majority of Air Traffic services in the UK.

Day to day

At the moment I am at the NATS college of air traffic control in Bournemouth. I am about a month away from finishing the ADI course (Airports) with a hope to going on to do an approach radar course. Day to day I am generally in lectures or doing sim runs. Every so often we get exams and summatives (Sim Assesments), this week I have 5 summatives on Low Vis Procedures.

Overall Job

Extremely steep learning curve at the moment. Just seem to be getting the hang of one thing when they bring something else into the mix. But overall I'm enjoying it very much.

Perks

Very good pay once I'm out of the college. Lots of time off. Getting to watch planes all day long.

Downsides

Shift work. The fact that I could get posted anywhere in the UK when I'm finished at the college.

Education?

Some form of further education is required to apply. I have 6 highers and 2 HNDs.

Do you like your job?

Yup I love it.
