Joe Rogan and Spotify

Word up, as we ageing hipsters are wont to say, my nutty cousin contacted my wife via Facebook and asked if I had had any jabs, when my wife replied in the affirmative and said that I was anticipating my booster, (at that time), the cousin said, “Tell him he’s a wimp, and that he’s dead to me.”
My wife, just before severing any ties with said cousin, replied, “Oh Barbara, what will he do? He’ll be in despair!”

Drama Queenery of the highest order brother. Seriously though 1 less set of cards to send out this year negating inflationary pressure somewhat :D

People are free to say what they want, they are free to believe what they want. I also believe that actions have consequences. The consequences of this are that if you deeply believe covid is fake then if you are tested positive, don't believe it, stay at home until you are better...no matter the cost (even at death).

It's not real. You are free to believe it's not real.

However, people don't....they will get help, clog up the healthcare system because they believe this misinformation...and those who actually need a bed, can't get a bed because someone thinks drinking bleach will cure covid.

So...while people can say this misinformation, they should not have a platform to BROADCAST it to millions, making the problem worse...yes, i said problem. Unless you want to foot the bill to all these unncessary hospital admissions?

i'm not acting like anything. i'm simply saying if you need to ask who decides what is misinformation then you are the type of person that specifically needs protecting from it.

I decide what's misinformation, I don't need Twitter or Spotify to censor people to protect me. I listened to some of the Joe Rogan podcast everyone was angry about, for example, and thought the guy was talking ****. Yeah some people will fall for it and it's not ideal, but censorship just reinforces people's opinions by making it seem like there's some giant coverup, the best way to counter what you may perceive as misinformation is to use solid facts and rationale backed up with evidence.

He does, that's why he has been lying about it.

Luckily we have a free and independent media.

Well I'm glad you believe in a free and independent media then

I'd been meaning to switch from Spotify for a while as I'd rather have my subs funding music than podcasters. That and their discovery features have been getting worse for years.

Switched to Tidal at the weekend. 1 quid for 3 months so that's saved 45quid, imported all my playlists. As long as the android auto interface is ok that'll be a permanent switch for me.

Is that Joe Rogan's fault that the public no longer believe anything the MSN or the politicians that represent them say? Or have they brought this upon themselves with their partisan and often outright dishonest conduct? Maybe the answer should be for them to get their act together and operate with some credibility, instead of shutting down the only motivation they might have to do so.

This is pure nonsense.

A private company not wanting to host certain views (or labeling their opinion on those views) is not censorship .

If governments were threatening Joe with imprisonment if he continued talking rubbish, then that would be something to get concerned about.

The premise of this entire thread and most of the viewpoints in it are flawed.

So if the Chinese Communist Party puts pressure on a social media company in China to censor views they don't like, is that the government or private companies doing the censorship? Do you ever realise you just completely lack any sort of critical thinking skills and the world isn't infact black and white? Like it's painful debating here because people are so closed minded and ignorant, on one hand they want a free and independent media to hold the government to account while also wanting to censor views they dislike, completely unaware of the irony of their position and refusing to change their minds when shown how contradictory these positions are

One side laps it up and thinks they are sticking it to the man and the other side hates it because they see the damage its doing.
Spot on. It is a shame the folk on the former side of your sentence don't acknowledge this. They then see it as a double-down attack.

Sure that sounds ridiculous but are they not free to think that? And how can you say with absolute certitude that the election wasn't rigged? You can't can you, yet you would want to shut down the conversation around it?
This is like a key stage 1 psychology question.

How do you know anything with certitude?

you're still highlighting why you need to be protected from misinformation.

The problem with the idea of censorship is that what most people think of doesn't apply anymore. You can say that anything short of putting someone in prison isn't censorship but if enough of the large platforms decide to ban someone, they are effectively censored from the vast majority of the population. Imagine if the only way that scientists were ever heard was if you went and found their white papers online or had to go directly to their websites.

And its not about the inability of people to see certain speakers. Its the power dynamic between those who are promoted to billions and those that are only given a tiny audience. Facebook can let anyone they want use their platform whilst simultaneously making sure that only 3 people ever see one side of an argument. Is that censorship?

The world is just a mess unfortunately and until we actually place our faith in science instead of celebrity idiots then we are doomed. It boggles my mind that people can look to a footballer or a talk show host or an influencers whos only talent is being attractive and think "this is the person who should educate me about scientific matters".

Ok nice substantive post, you sure got me there

To be fair, even if you are correct and you can filter out the misinformation, most people can't. Society is built on the idea of the carrot and the stick. People cannot be trusted to make the best decisions for themselves. If you asked everyone if they think taxes should be abolished half of them would probably say yes. If Katie Price says the vaccine turns you infertile a not insubstantial portion of her fans will start parroting that opinion.

Just because you can make an informed choice doesn't mean everyone can. This is the dichotomy of freedom. In an increasingly complex and nasty world, how do you give people freedom whilst also protecting them from people who would manipulate them. And its not a them issue because we live in a democracy. Its an issue for everyone.

Watching Joe's Instagram post....I don't think he gets it. Even in the post he is using 'opinion' as 'fact'.

Also Spotify must have had a bit of a word for him to even bother making the post in the first place.

Lol what?

The only viewpoints here that are painful are ones like yours and the OP's.

I am not advocating for the government to censor views i don't like. I'm respecting Spotify's right to host whatever they want on their servers, and have their own opinions and thoughts on the content too.

Agreed,

And to make matters worse, mixed in with the dumb celebrities - there's a sizeable number of wealthy, clever, morally bankrupt, swindlers and internet grifters, who are telling lies purely so people will buy their junk products; anti-5G wrist bands, expensive blog subscriptions and invest in their sham companies.

I find these days, that there's far too much information about extremely difficult subjects banded about on social media. Information such as medical research and literature which requires years of academia and education to be able to understand. The average Joe on Youtube or Facebook who can barely add up or spell correctly on a good day, doesn't have a hope in hell of being able to understand it, let alone draw any meaningful conclusions from it.
