Josep Guardiola: is he actually a good manager?

Barcelona's Pep Guardiola 'on brink of leaving club'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17855980

Pep Guardiola is understood to be on the brink of ending his tenure as manager of Barcelona after telling the club he cannot carry on.

The 41-year-old Catalan will announce his intentions at a press conference at the Nou Camp on Friday afternoon.

And barring a last-minute change of heart, Guardiola is expected to confirm his departure from the club he has led to two Champions League titles.

yea i read this last night. end of barca dominance?

Fabregas making a bad move joining barca?

No, you were wrong before, you're still wrong. You think Barca with ANY manager and that team is going to struggle for titles.

You think Barca at any point in the next decade will have anything but a significantly higher chance at titles every year than Arsenal, you're deluded.

He's won two or three titles already(can't remember if he played in both super cups) how many rubbish cups would he have won at Arsenal this year? Joke cups or not, they are things Arsenal won't and can't win at the moment.

Think Guardiola has made too many mistakes and might not want to be involved too long at a "home" club. HE can go manage City, with far less stress. He's from Barca, he loves Barca, he played at Barca, he lives there, he'll live there after he's out of management. Failing there makes his life outside football worse, failing at City wouldn't, or anywhere else basically.

Would be good to see him take on a team that isn't a title capable side and see if he can make them one, hell it would be interesting to see what he could do at Arsenal. Right now he took over a team in the same year the only rival kind of fell apart, while also getting the worlds best player up to full form. Until this year there really hasn't been a lot of pressure there as Barca were just the best team in the world, till now.

no one cares about the super world cup! what are you smoking? he hasnt won the league yet or the CL!

he might win the spanish fa cup but thats about it mate.

Barca fans and players will be sad to see him go, been the by far the best and most exciting team for past few years he's been there.

Will be interesting to see who would take over. They should avoid Benitiez - I know he's looking for a job. He'd be a disaster.

Rafa would rather the Madrid job.

Then again you clearly no nothing.

Anyone else think there is too much emphasis on managers in general? E.g. if Pep Guardiola left and was replaced. Are Barca players going to lose their ability?

I do to a degree.

I mean if someone on £100k+ a week is not self motivated to perform to the best of their ability week in week out for the team they play for I think they should have wages suspended or be sidelined like Mancini did with Tevez.

It's an easy cop out to blame the managers now for when a team under performs.

I said the Barca Empire was failing, this proves it, the players are burnt out, the manager is burnt out, who ever takes over has big shoes to fill.

Can't see him joining Chelsea. That said, I don't know why any manager would unless they wanted to boost their pension fund and laugh at Roman for a few months

I can't see Chelsea replacing Di Matteo anytime soon. He's done a fantastic job and he's obviously got the respect from the players. Bringing another manager in is more likely to be another AVB scenario.

Say Chelsea lose both finals, is Di Matteo still the right man for the job? Either way Guardiola wont be taking a new job in the foreseeable.

Finished what could be a close second in the league, semi final of a CL tie which they should easily have won if their finishing was remotely decent, and still the kings cup to play for, doesn't really sound to me like the players are burnt out,
if I saw an example of burnt out players that needed replacing that would be the Inter squad going into 10/11.

Honestly very disappointed to see him go, I really hope Barca maintain their standard without him but always loved seeing him on the side lines.

I'd say yes.

He's beaten Barcelona, battered Spurs, and managed to get to the final of the 2 biggest club competitions.

All this after a horrible horrible season under AVB.

That's got to count for something. And that's if they lose both finals. I can see them winning at least one of them.

No secret that he is probably my favourite figure in all of football, and what I said was also completely true :p

Good luck to whoever takes the job though, I bet the players knew it was coming sooner rather than later but probably going to be a tough one to take.

I think other teams are figuring out how to beat them as shown by Chelsea and Real in the last week.

They don't seem to have a plan B if plan A is not working.

I don't think you can divert from this plan of giving your team countless easy scoring opportunities over two legs and not taking them, Barcas 'plan A' is fine.

Chelsea had Barca much better figured out in 2009, 2009 stats
2012 stats

Both home legs.
Chelsea could have won in 2009 by 3 or 4 goals if the ref wasn't incompetent/bent, this Chelsea side got very lucky and were also pretty lucky Napoli decided they couldn't finish at Stamford Bridge.

The plan b thing is pretty rubbish, as said before they do not need one. Plan A works and it works well. The difference is how well they play on the day.
First leg @ Chelsea they should have won and won comfortably but they missed some great chances and the second leg they just did not play well. It happens, teams have a bad day.

Will be interesting to see who replaces him, all the talk of he had it easy because they are just the greatest bunch of players is a little rubbish. It is his work ethic and style that got the team playing like that which has done it. Ok the players obviously help but it was his vision and his style overall. He is Barca through and through.

Would also like to point out the woman on Sky Sports has some rather large assessts :o
