Josep Guardiola: is he actually a good manager?

There was talk of him 6 months ago walking away from the job, so well before it all went pear shaped.

Yes, like an exit strategy. I'm not a fan of one year contracts or the fact that he's planning to bug out now. It smacks a little bit of great boss when everything is going right but doesn't deal with pressure well.

I wondered if losing these two competitions might have made him more tempted to stay, but this has been on the cards for ages.

I think Wenger is under contract until next year, I can't see him getting sacked, and I doubt he'd step aside. Chelsea then? I bloody hope not.

There's been the same talk for the last couple of years but he's still stayed on regardless, the fact that he's apparently calling it a day now when for the first time during his tenure he won't end the season with the league title seems a very weak/defeatest thing to do IMO

Then again he was never going to be long term ever since his first year it was said, the amount of times Guillem Ballague went on about how he was constantly working very late and it consuming his entire life made it seem only like a matter of time, maybe the tiredness is showing and he feels he has done all he can do.

Please don't let him go to Chelsea and no doubt be embarrassed by a retarded owner.

Isn't he out of contract in the summer any way, and he said at the start of this season it might be his last. Don't see what the big deal is really.

Of course a problem Guardiola has got now is that if he does leave Barca the next job he takes (assuming he just doesn't go straight back to Barca after a year out) is that he'll be tied into a long term contract at his next club (one would imagine) - no easy way out if the job gets too much for him then....

England need a manager...

Do you not like the man at all? :p

From the timing it looks like it might be a direct result of the exit from the Champions League and conceding La Liga but as has been said I think he's been considering quitting Barcelona for a while now - if he'd said it before they played the big games then that would also have been viewed as poor timing. At least doing it now when the season is more or less over for them means that whoever replaces him will have the chance to ask for the transfers they want over the summer and have time to build/reshape the team as necessary.

Barca do still have a cup final yet to play, should be a belter v Bilbao as well

Barca fans and players will be sad to see him go, been the by far the best and most exciting team for past few years he's been there.

Will be interesting to see who would take over. They should avoid Benitiez - I know he's looking for a job. He'd be a disaster.

True enough, I wasn't thinking of that. Realistically though they've lost out on the two main prizes of their season (despite already having won the Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup) which is what I was meaning.

He always had a 12 month contract and as said at the start of the season it may be his last.
It is true as well you look at how much he has aged since being there! He won 6 trophies in the first season? They are expected to win everything because of his success, I can imagine the pressure being unbelievable.
One thing though is he has always seemed to handle himself well and I rarely have seen him lose the plot. Comes across incredibly smart.

There was a point in the season when every ~15 games Barcelona won a cup :D or something to that effect. Unbelievable.

How so? The Spanish press are significantly more critical than the English.

They are far more fickle than the english media. Its a much more pressured environment with regards to the matches but maybe not so much the personal happenings of the players from what I can tell.

The spanish press are much worse than the english press. There is a reason spanish players cover their mouths when chatting.

As for Pep, he has the love of the players due to his achievements as a player and because he was so involved in the b team. He has tried new things and not had much luck but that should be applauded.

He might have the best team available at present but making it work is another matter. He has made it work to an extent that watching barcelona at times is like watching water flow (unlike my beloved chelsea).
