Jury Service (Do NOT turn this into a 'how to get out of jury service' thread)

Ahh bugger, just received the letter.

The thing says I got to start on Monday 10th June, and usually last 10 working days, that is fine. But it says that it can continue for more than 10 working days.

On the 30th June I have a big event on I cannot miss, this will be the 15th working day, is there anyway you can get out of one day or phone in sick?

Otherwise do you think its best to fill the form in providing a later date and not risk it?
From my experience, if you have a prebooked appointment you tell them on the first day and they do their best to accommodate, one chap in ours was due to go to the grand national and allowed the day off for it (the Friday of the racing). It's also unlikely to last more than 2 weeks and you'll get referred to as first week or second week jurors. If a case does look like it could last longer you can inform the judge who might swap you out of a jury, if it lasts longer and you're on it I think it's pretty well tough luck though.

A colleague got called up and the day before he went, they phoned up and said he is dismissed. A bit of a **** take considering he had to re-plan his life for nothing. It's not surprising people don't show up or make excuses. Its not like you get a better service from the state when you need them.

I don't mind doing my bit and I'm not trying to get out of it completely but thier timing is ****, I would hope they can be flexible, time will tell.

I've requested it be deferred anyway, keep my fingers crossed now.

Yeah they agreed my deferral request, so doing it 3rd July onwards which suits me fine as I have nothing significant ont he calendar until the end of August and even that one isnt the end of the world.

Somewhat looking forward to it if im completely honest, the court is about 15 miles away but its a good run on a motorcycle and there is a car park literally opposite the court that has free parking for motorcycles, and hopefully being July the weather will be ok so good reason to get out and put some miles on the bike, as I work from home I don't use it that often anymore. Also will be nice change I have been working from home for 4 and a half years and whilst it suits me down to a tee, I think it'll be good to get out for a few weeks.

Mine wasn't fun at all. Sat around for 3 days waiting for something to happen then on day 3 trial finally started, I wasn't picked and dismissed. Would had rather just gone to work.

So this is me so far this week, first week in.

Monday, arrived about 8:30, sat there 4 and a half hours sent home.

More or less the same yesterday.

Today turned up at 10am was sent straight back home again......

I have not even seen a judge or inside of a courtroom.

At least my employer is really good, I didnt tell them about the first 2 days as the court basically said as you havnt had a lunch break and still need to travel home it goes over half a day so dont worry about it, but today I let my boss know about half 11 he said thats fine thanks for letting me know.

Sitting here playing Mechwarrior now, rock and roll, tempted to start drinking.

Had summons through for the beginning of next year which is really not ideal for various reasons. It says I can suggest three other dates I’d be available instead.

Has anyone ever done this, did they actually use your suggested dates or just forget about you? :p

you might find the information you are looking for here

Depends, but you shouldn't have any issues deferring.

If you can though I'd really recommend doing jury service. It's an interesting experience.
I got the summons in the post recently and on telling people about it, they immediately go into how you can defer or get out of it. I'm kind of curious about the whole process so I'm just doing it.

I got called up about 20 yrs ago.. Filled the form in and sent it back.. Then got a letter saying thanks but no thanks and they'll remove me from the register.
Gutted as I was hoping for a skive from work at the time..

I did it this year, eventually lasted a total of almost 3 weeks, was an interesting experience,
but my god the waiting around....arrrggghhhh :mad::mad:

No guarantee that even if you say you're available that you'll be chosen for a jury, though you still technically need to be available for potentially the second week

I don’t think jury summons is as random as they make it out to be.

certain people I know get selected all the time, while others (touch wood) like me, have never been selected.

personally, I would just reply back, “Me no speak British! No understanding me…”
i’m a massive lefty and would just be a PITA and let all the tree huggers go free while try to get ”the man” hanged for the silliest of things, say… wasting billions of public money on the wrong type of masks…

I did mine in 2020. Got chosen to sit on two cases over the two weeks. 1st was a rape of a child and 2nd was a he said/she said rape case of a boyfriend and girlfriend.
