Jury Service (Do NOT turn this into a 'how to get out of jury service' thread)

I don’t think jury summons is as random as they make it out to be.

certain people I know get selected all the time, while others (touch wood) like me, have never been selected.

personally, I would just reply back, “Me no speak British! No understanding me…”
i’m a massive lefty and would just be a PITA and let all the tree huggers go free while try to get ”the man” hanged for the silliest of things, say… wasting billions of public money on the wrong type of masks…
Friend did JS 4 years ago and she and the jury all lived down 3 streets. Yet none knew each other! My friend lives at 51 and the other 3 jury members down her road live at (example) 14, 110, and 175.

I got the summons in the post recently and on telling people about it, they immediately go into how you can defer or get out of it. I'm kind of curious about the whole process so I'm just doing it.
It's weird, it's such an important public service. I get that for some it isn't feasible due to work/finances but really if you get asked and you can you absolutely should.
It's quite a responsibility, you're deciding if someone is innocent or guilty. You want a fair, representative cross section of people on a jury. Not a load of dossers with nothing better to do.

for me it depends on the case, obviously I can’t choose what case I get assigned to…

if someone is robbing old grannies to fund their lifestyle… then yes it’s important to get to the bottom of it…
if someone is showing up in court for the x number of times for shoplifting to fed themselves, then it’s a massive waste of time and public funds, the only thing that is guilty is society.

It still humours me this very topic got the forum in to a "spot of bother" some years back being referenced by various "outlets" as a method to "get out of jury service"!

Someone loan me some quotes, I've run out.

I'd be amazed if you ever saw a stealing food for eating case in a jury court. That would have to go through the give-a-**** meter of the shops, the police, the CPS and the magistrates court.

Stealing shelves of alcohol, clothing, vapes, makeup, meat joints as a full time job for years with accomplices, yes.

This is the bit that makes me think I wouldn't want to do it.
It looks like they give you such a tiny amount. You shouldn't be out of pocket doing jury service.
It is not even a paltry sum if you're employed. It is derisory sum. However, some companies acknowledge the civic benefit and pay full pay but that's entirely on the employer of course.

There is a really good chance that they've not updated how much it is in decades.

IIRC magistrates were complaining 10-15 years ago that due to cuts in the funding their compensation for milage etc was basically not covering costs/they had issues claiming back things like parking, and that many courts didn't have things like tea making facilities but instead you had to buy drinks, bear in mind that the magistrates were actively saving the government a fortune as they were IIRC only ever given what was supposed to be enough to cover their out of pocket expenses.

When you do it, take some good books or some other distraction, you'll need it.

You can also try talking to people.

I know right......

But honestly, once we started talking to each other (two quite good looking women in my case) time passed a whole load quicker.

Shame because on our last day, we didn't know it was our last day, so never said a proper goodbye:(

Ah well, it was fun while it lasted.

I’m i thinking that they rather have jury service members going on public transport rather than drive?

I’m ok where I live with buses. Though many parts of Leicester the buses are rubbish.

I did JS in Loughborough over 18 months ago, i am retired, and travelled from New Parks by bus, in all fairness at that time, i never found it difficult or painful, though i used the bus to get to work in Oadby, so was like a normal day.

Someone at work got summoned, phoned the court and said they just didn't want to do it. They removed them from the list O_o
