Just allow club talk within threads already

please stop talking sense, it has no place on here :p

It's pretty hard to say if and when something requires its own thread, especially when people get 'funny' about club specific threads being made. You also can't anticipate how people are going to respond.

I just don't get what problem you have with it. It creates no problem as far as I can tell. Locking it creates a problem as it stifles discussion and annoys people.

I've just come on here and find it a total **** take that the summer transfer thread has been closed on the basis that it's not a club thread almost like there is a club thread for the discussion that was taking place and the punishable offence was discussing it in the wrong place.

So let me get this right then;

We're not allowed club threads but at the same time we're not allowed to discuss what may merit being in a club thread either. :o

that makes little sense, can you try and explain your point a bit better as that is just confusing

so supporters of other clubs or people looking for transfer information should have to wade through 90% of the thread being unrelated to the topic ?

thats a very tricky one, how do we punish individuals ? I really don't want to start suspending folks for that sort of thing

Well that's the thing, if derailing threads is such an issue then should:

A - The thread be locked, no-one gets to discuss it, discussion is halted (making the forum pointless)

or

B - The repeat offenders, people that take threads off topic with the same bile week in, week out. I won't name names but it should be pretty clear who was doing it tonight and every other time. They get infractions/warnings/3 day suspensions until they stop doing it?

Scenario A is clearly not the right answer unless you want to stifle all discussion.

a thread on berbatov's contract wouldn't have much mileage anyway. it's surely more logical to have it in the transfer thread as opposed to a new topic that would maybe make 2 pages?

I can see your point but then we get bitched at for being heavy handed with warnings/suspensions

If King Kenny announced that Suarez might want to leave at the end of the season would that be discussed in the transfer thread? If RvP came out and said he didn't want to sign a new contract would that be discussed in the transfer thread? Obviously, yes. So there is no problem with Fergie saying Berbatov might want to leave in the summer for first team football.

It's hardly a lot of effort for them is it? Let's be realistic.

It may also interest them as well, I read all of the posts in there regardless of what club they are talking about.

but if the clubs in question aren't active in the transfer market, that's the way it'd be anyway. same as any back pages of tabloids or broadsheet sport section, the (harsh) reality is, people DO care about some clubs more than others and some clubs do more transfers than others.

Okay I'll break it down;

The conversation that was going on in the summer transfer thread was against the rules because it isn't a club thread? Correct?

How can you use that argument when club threads are against the rules as well? It's basically you mods telling us what we can and cannot discuss on this forum.... note I said forum because if a thread gets derailed fair enough point the individuals in question to the direction of the correct thread but seeing as the correct thread per-say isn't allowed on here either you're basically limiting what we can talk about.

Way to create an active community by ruling with that iron fist :rolleyes:

Well now you're getting bitched at for locking entire threads :p

In the end if you want to crack down on meandering topics then those are your two options. The third option is just to leave things as they have been in the last few years with the transfer thread, it's never been a big problem before.

The nature of discussion is that the most pressing issues will be discussed. If there's nothing more interesting to discuss than Berbatov's contract, then that will be discussed. :confused: It just seems the mods are focusing on the wrong issues by closing harmless threads while, as Shami says, allowing the usual suspects to derail threads and wind people up.
