Yeah that's pretty funny, can't talk about a single club's affairs too much or it gets locked for being a club thread and you can't start a club thread to talk about that club's affairs either
I think the only solution is make it mandatory that every Man Utd fan posts a little tidbit about Wigan at the bottom of every post, consider it charity in raising the profile of the little Northern pie-town

In the end if you want to crack down on meandering topics then those are your two options. The third option is just to leave things as they have been in the last few years with the transfer thread, it's never been a big problem before.
at least you can see the probem unlike some others, the problem was that thread got took over by about 4 folks to the exclusion of others
To discuss a transfer it's quite difficult to not discuss the club and the situation around it also. This applies to any club, as has been seen with Arsenal discussion etc before.
If a team isn't active in the window etc then the discussion won't be there, a few pages previous there was discussion of RvP/City.
It comes and goes in waves of which club/story is important at the time. If there wasn't any depth to the discussion it wouldn't be interesting and it'd just be someone copying and pasting BBC Gossip info each day.
The issue of the thread was that it started to get derailed by talking about Fergies transfer dealings - which wasn't the reason why I posted the Berbatov quotes, it was to discuss Dimitar Berbatov possibly transferring in the summer. Something which is on topic, no? To then discuss the good/bad side of wether he should be transferred surely is still on topic, as it is relevant to the transfer?

if folks want to tlak about Man U transfer targets then fine but they were discussong loads of other stuff, who should play left back is a valid topic, is Welbeck/Berbaov **** is another, they have only the slightest relationship to that thread

The previous Wenger thread was a classic example after it was closed for being a club thread. How can you discuss a club's manager without discussing the club itself?
I think it's helpful to have this discussion on here though.

Irrelevant, When you discuss potential transfers it links to other situations at the club, other players in that position, their roles, players roles, how the side plays ect ect,
There is nothing to stop other people posting newer transfer gossip to encourage the discussion to move on.
These 'topics' within the thread come and go as do the paper headlines.

Star out all the Premiership team names, that'll solve specific club talk. Might make fixture lists and the prediction league a bit tougher though

Rotty for the love of god look at who instigates these derailments time and time again, assuming the thread got locked because Tummy took it off topic posting Fergie's accolades just look at who he was replying to.....
Look who started the whole can we compare Welbeck with Suarez and if we say Suarez is crap can we say Welbeck is crap as well....
Clamping down on what can be discussed on a forum in a sure fire way to ruin this forum, clamping down on certain individuals though is a sure fire way to improve the forum. You guys need to decide which route you'd rather go down
I don't see how people are excluded just because 4 people are having a discussion. Anyone is free to just jump in.
And obviously the biggest stories are going to be discussed. It just so happens that most of the stories come from Man Utd. So you can either allow the discussions to take place or just ban talk about Man Utd altogether.
I'm obviously not a United fan but welcome talk about individual clubs without the threat of conversations being cut short by mods locking threads.

If a story came where you were looking to buy a new player, which would be posted in the transfer thread, then surely discussion relating to the fact if that player is needed/better for the club than the current one is relevant.
The right back discussion in the thread came from someone saying a right back needs to be bought in this window for example, surely a valid topic that was then discussed?
The Welbeck discussion came from something completely random about Suarez and statistics if I remember rightly - it was odd and the usual suspects came in with their statistics and it became wall of texts, I'd agree, that was a bit silly and became unrelated.
we can't talk about berbatov in the weekend thread though cos he never plays lol that was how it came about in the transfer thread with the ferguson quote.
you have a point and it is 3 or 4 individuals, maybe you have a point and that may be a better way to go and then allow the others to stick to a looser set of rules

See the thing is, it got taken off topic because he posted that, it stayed off topic because you and others rose to the bait, and always do (I have been guilty myself but I'm trying not to) Just let him talk to no-one, I assume most people have him on ignore anyway.
