Just saw someone jump off the top of a 5 story car park.

Well if he had saved her life, then being injured would have been worth it.

Why do people keep saying this? Surely you can understand that the person would hit you with so much force you'd at least be critically injured yourself? If you're going to save them, it pretty-much has to be done before they jump.

I wasn't saying that it would be the wisest option, or that you wouldn't have a high chance of dying yourself - I was simply pointing out that risking injury to save another person's life is not stupid.

I think different people have different views on people who suffer depression to the extent of wanting to die.

I personally believe the hard approach may not always be the right one. These people are NOT thinking rationally at the times they are in this frame of mind, a different approach is needed to comfat and reasure them into the correct professional help.

Exactly, people in such a state of desperation are clearly not in any fit state to make rational decisions.

Some of the comments show how ignorant some people are and their lack of maturity.

As someone who has been in this situation, I have to say that some people who want to kill themself are rational. Some people are born with medical conditions, physical or psychological and theres no cure and the suffering is extreme. It is wrong to make the judgement that people who want to die are not rational because it denies trivialises their situation and its a judgement. most mental health professionls do this and it intensifies the feelings of suicide because from that point what ever they say they are judged to be irrational and neurotic and its yet another reason to die.

People dont like to admit that some situations cant be helped and suicide can be a rational decision. life is not fair and some professionals dont acknowlage this and they say "theres always another option" or "your not thinking straight" classic one liners infest health systems all over the world.

I'm sorry, catch her?

To put it into perspective.

A CRT monitor weighs less than this person.
A CRT monitor is of a better shape to catch

Would you attempt to catch a CRT monitor from 5 floors?

No, you would not.

Catching is most certainly out of the question and I would hope nobody would ever try to catch a human being falling from any great height.

The only 'assistance' you can give from ground zero is lessening the impact of their fall by either softening the ground below (Ironically probably the only thing you would achieve by trying to catch them) or reducing their velocity before it - E.g a bedsheet or similar held out.

Man, ffs, If only I had gotten there earlier I would have gone up there and tried to talk her out of it.

Nobody was trying to talk her out of it ffs. They were all just standing there with their ****ing phones .

FFS man, i don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight. I keep hearing the sound when she hit the ground. :( It was a huge thud mixed with cracking noise.

It's a crappy thing to see and it will haunt you a little. I was somewhat haunted by seeing the results of a South African meeting Metal at 75mph+ on the motorway.

Things like this happen, nothing you could have done in your circumstance would have changed it and as disgusting as the actions of other people around were this has no bearing on you.

You have to come to terms with the little (no) power you had and the age old **** happens.

This will probably mess you up for a week or two and then you'll get past it. You're a level-headed person, there was nothing you could do, and those other people are idiots.

Mums are emotional, so take care of yours.

People that cause suffering to strangers whilst taking their lives make me angry. If they want to end it then do it privately not in public whereby innocent people will be adversly affected

I feel for you asim, seeing someone die is not something I wish upon anyone

To be fair, a tall building is one of the most attractive ways of doing it. Doing it "privately" usually leads to the most painful. How dare you claim to be "angry" that these people chose to end it in such a way that others are affected? Who cares about the public at large - think about the families of the dead and their loved ones. They're the most affected - hit with much more impact than those ****holes filming the act on their phones.

What about my girlfriend, who whenever she sees a hotel is haunted by visions of a man throwing himself to his death? So much so that she has difficulty even being nearby?

Suicide is a selfish act - but to cause the suffering of others in the process of trying to end your own is, frankly, bizarre. So yes, it is fair to be angry that they didn't choose a private location.

Year ago I witnessed a bloke jump to his death from a high rise block of flats in Edinburgh. I was out test driving a mates' car that I was thinking of buying when I pulled over as I though the tyre had went flat. That's when I noticed a small crowd all pointing and looking skyward. He was on the 12th floor and watching him fall and hitting the deck gave me such a sickening feeling in my stomach that I almost passed out. People were all hanging out of their window trying to get a better look and standing around the car park below almost egging him on. The noise that he made as he hit the ground will stay with me forever. The fire service had to be called to hose the car park down afterwards. Those that were shouting at him to jump soon became speechless and I hope that his death still haunts them to this day.
I actually thought I was going to be fine afterwards despite my shock, but that night I burst into tears without realising that I was even going to cry it happened so quick:(

Al

This was interesting and useful.

Did your girlfriend actually see that or is it some kind of anomaly? Sorry, but your post doesn't explain that - eg. urban legend that she's bought into etc.

However, the "suicide is selfish" standpoint is held by the many and is, largely, the definition of ignorance. Suicidal people need much more than that - those who have gone through with it didn't get it and have been labelled "selfish"; the UTTER crescendo of society's inability to associate with the illness.

I've posted many times about this (from first hand experience) throughout my time on this forum - including when one guy jumped to his death in Derby (or Mansfield - sorry, I can't exactly remember) - while the public urged him to do it, and I can't be bothered going through it all again. If you think suicidal people are cowards, you have much to learn.

I get angry when someone tries to comit suicide by risking the lives of others. My cousin was hit by a driver who was driving the wrong way at 120mph his friend was killed and he had a long recovery in hospital. THATS selfish.
