Kerbal Space Program

Been using that, but doesn't seem to work in deep space.

I wish they would make computer controlled flight. More interested in the building and stuff than the flying.

The Mun and some other stuff: The 0.12 Update is Released!
http://www.kerbalspaceprogram.com/download.php

New on 0.12:
* A Moon
* New Orbital Camera Mode. Like Free Mode, but aligned to the solar system plane, like the Map View Camera is.
* New Auto Camera Mode. Chooses between the other modes based on the state of the flight.
* Liquid Engines now support thrust vectoring (gimballing).
* New LV-T45 Vectoring-Enabled Liquid Engine.
* The VAB will now allow you to select a Command Module before starting a new ship.
* Planets and Moons now rotate.

Bug Fixes:
* Improved the way velocities are applied when resuming physics.
* Fixed the Advanced SAS icon showing as a question mark on the VAB.
* Fixed a bug where cloning parts by removing and undoing would cause them to receive duplicate IDs (and crash the game when loading the ship again).
* Tidied up the flight statistics numbers formatting a bit, so they're easier to make sense of.
* Time Warp will now smoothly increase/decrease towards the set time rate, for a much more fluid transition.
* Made several improvements to the Map View orbit rendering.
* Fixed the rails->physics transition, so that there is no significant change anymore in orbital parameters when going out of warp.
* Made some significant improvements to the physical joints that hold the ship together. Ships will not wobble anymore when going back into 1x time after warping, and the joints themselves are more stable overall.
* Made a small tweak to the part tooltips on the VAB, to prevent them from going off-screen on small resolutions. (was noticeable with the new command pod selection dialog)

i was using the experimental releases, and i managed to land on the moon last night. Stock parts its next to impossible, uses too many parts and the FPS goes to the low single digits, also landing a standard rocket is very hard due to lack of legs etc.

So i used an Aries1 rocket with a built in lander, and it made it pretty easy if im honest lol.

Got this yesterday, and I've been fiddling with it this evening seeing as my brain doesn't seem to be up for BF3 tonight.

Great fun, it took me a while to figure out how to get into orbit but now that I have I've a better idea of what I'm up to. Next goal is getting something into orbit around the moon. I've almost done it with stock parts, but my ship ran out of fuel half way through the second burn in the Hohmann transfer, and I went sliding just past it and out into deep space. Gah!

Anyone got something onto the moon and back? I really need to get my head around the proper rocket construction principles.

yes, on stock parts ive got to the moon, dropped "Commsat" like a probe, then left the moon and returned safely. On stock parts i cannot land on the moon without crashing. The Crew live through some of the crashes but cant get back :(

Good tips for "easy" moon shot.

1: Get into a good Orbit, roughly 70k-100k up, heading 90degrees.
2: DO NOT try to go straight to the moon from the ground.
3: Use time acceleration to orbit around the planet, waiting for the moon to rise. As soon as it starts to rise, start to burn your fuel to get the higher orbit to 11'400'000meters (around 2750-2850m/s in "surface" mode). On the map it will look like you are firing way off in front of the moon, but as you get into the higher orbit, your speed will be very low and the moon will catch you up.
4: as the moon captures you, you will most likely have to do a retro burn so you stay in orbit at the moon. Retro burn at the lowest point of the orbit till you are doing about 400-450m/s, you should now be in orbit around the moon.
5: Coming back is easier, you don't have to raise your orbit too much for the Planet to recapture you.

What's the Comsat for? Any tips on additional rocket hardware mods?

commsat is a heavy payload made to look like a satellite, it was part of a challenge in this thread a few months ago. Basically its as if you are launching a satellite into space, it weights a lot and does nothing. But due to its weight its hard to get it up there. Me releasing in orbit around the moon is just like Nasa doing its thing. Just done it as a challenge to myself.

This will get you to the moon EASY.

Plenty will get to the moon.

Iirc
Capsuale, advanced balance thing, >coupling >4 fuel tanks, new gimble engine > coupler > tri splitter > advanced stabiliser> 4 fuel tanks > 3 gimble motors + 6 solid boosters.

That should be capable of reaching the moon. I've even tried two lots of 6 solid booster, but you don't gain much speed.

I've honed the art of sliding a rocket just past the moon without enough fuel to get into orbit.

Time for a redesign I think ,I'm going to try your design Glaucus!

I've tried it a few times and it seems a bit difficult to control. I'm kind of surprised how well the gimballed thrusters cope with the stabilisation without SAS and thrusters, but I'm sure it's probably not very fuel efficient.

Picked this up as it looked like fun - addictive !

Got a few questions guys.

1) Boosters, I can't get them to ignite at same time as motors if i use the release brackets - only want them for inital burn, but without main engines running too its a waste of time.
2) How do you join parts together ? seem to have to add them to main nose cone but that limits what can be connected to what.
3) Are the mods show in thread official?

1) when your building you need to re organise your stages in the right hand side, drag and drop
2) you can use couplers and brackets but not a huge amount of options on stock parts.
3) not official, made by fans. Look on the forum for mod packs.

tried moving the boosters/engines togther, engines/decouplers, can't get them to play together nicely.

Since they burn off pretty fast, they are dead weight until my stage 1 is finished.
but is boosters are stage 1, then engines dont work, or the boosters decouple on launch.

Ill play some more i guess
