Kerbal Space Program

I got the demo of this on Friday and I played it way too much over the weekend. Definitely the most addictive game I've played in a long time.

Yesterday evening I finally managed to get my payload safely landed on Mun. Not easy!

I realised that if you use the Advanced SAS module you can get away with using a slow burner rocket that gradually takes you into orbit, more effective that a dozen solid rocket boosters.

I keep reaching mun, landing and having a wander around and then running out of fuel on the way home. If I add fuel to this last stage, I still run out! I guess because my lower stages don't get me as far due to the extra weight. Is this a linear relationship? I.e.

same, So far I have 3 kerbins stuck on Mun, even the rescue craft to pick up the first two got stuck on the Mun :p

I need to read up a bit more about optimal builds I guess. My biggest issue is just getting a 70km orbit around Kerbal which tends to eat so much fuel

Try installing Kerbal Engineer or Mechjeb: they'll give you delta V values for your builds in the VAB, and once you start learning how to maximise that you'll have a much easier time getting to and from places.

dont be surprised that getting into orbit takes up so much fuel. As Heinlein said, "If you can get your ship into orbit, you're halfway to anywhere." ps. i would recommend aiming for a 100km orbit just so you have a bit of lee way between the rocket and kerbin's atmosphere

This is massively key. Once you're in orbit, the rest is so relatively easy. I used 5 mainsail engines with 10 X32 tanks (the big orange ones - 2 per engine, asparagus configuration) and 8 boosters to get 50t+ of lander (inc. fuel) into orbit. From there, 4 LN atomic rockets got me to the Mun and back again with 40% fuel remaining. Test run for Duna landing.

First attempt at landing on the Mun failed, couldn't get the ship landed and ended up crashing. Pod survived though so now I have to build another rocket for a rescue attempt!

I think I will wait for a sale haha.

To be honest while it seems like a lot, it's more than a challenge that will give you better value for money than almost any game out there apart from the total war games IMO

Everything you build is purely your creation, and every failure your fault, every achievement is yours and the satisfaction when everything goes as predicted is great!!!

I purchased the full game directly from Kerbal website. Few 1000 hours of game time will be invested in this over the next few years.

I have been browsing the KSP forums on my lunch break and notice people talk about a Kracken. I'm not sure what this is? Space Kracken definitely sounds cool but I've never seen it..

Unless Is it just the times your ship just explodedes for no reason because the game is having some kind of Physics hissy fit or something I assume? I've only had it happen a few times.. once on the launch pad after a few seconds of slight wobbling and one time completely unexpectedly when orbiting at 1x in Map View. An actual space monster would be more exciting....

It's not such a big issue now.
It was when you went to far from the sun and/or reached stupid speeds. Game would flake out. It's largely been fixed.

However there is a refrence to it, a dead kraken on one of the moons, one off the jool moons IRC.

Edit,
On Bop, go get a rover down on it and go exploring. One of the better Easter eggs.

The Deep Space Kraken is a bug in the game that is experienced in deep space. It is an error with the games physics engine, PhysX, which attacks spaceships as their velocity increases. The number of parts in your ship has a large effect on what speed the Kraken Manifests itself, as well as how much it affects your ship. It primarily causes your craft to go off trajectory due to forces that shouldn't be there.
The cause of this bug is extreme velocity; the bug subtly exists even in Kerbin orbit, though is mostly only noticeably experienced in Kerbol orbit due to velocity you "gain" when you transition SOI to Kerbol. A fix was implemented in 0.17, involving offloading velocity to the universe around you meaning that the focused vessel will always be at a somewhat low speed. However, the same bug under a new name, the space Cthulhu, can break apart ships when quickly warping out of high time accelerations (as of 0.17). It has been reported that Cthulhu can attack ships that are still on the launch pad when coming out of a high time warp.

I finally landed on the Mun last night!

I was aiming for just outside a crater but I think I need little more practice landing. :D

Thank god for ASAS and RCS! :p

Next up: a rescue mission, cos my lander's out of fuel.

I had a weird problem though: I installed a new part, an inflatable habitat and it seemed to wipe all the standard parts from the game. So when I launched my saved game none of my ships would load. I lost about 6 flights that were going :(

Start again and removed remote tech. I love it, but until we can somehow fudge geostationery orbit it's frustrating and useless. Goo on a mission to a far away planet and everything messes up.

Sending a kethane satelite to plot the moon, then will send miners, creat a mun space station and a shuttle to transfer the kethane up. As kethane plane engines don't require oxygen can then go exploring some other planets in a plane.

Stevio: Nice angle.

I would suggest you don't need the radial engines though, they're not great fuels-wise and add extra weight. With a bit of practice you should have no problems orbiting and landing on the Mun with just the poodle rock-o-max engine.
