Kerbal Space Program

Naah, you just need to make bigger rockets :p. Up until very recently I've just been getting into the sun's orbit with a gravity assist from the Mun and taking it from there because I genuinely didn't realise that going straight from Kerbin orbit was so much more fuel efficient. Massive waste of fuel I know but I've fumbled my way across most of the planets and their moons like this so there's no reason why you cant too :)

Getting a gravity assist from the Mun should massively help in a interplanetary transfer if it's lined up. Works in real life afterall!
I imagine it's just a massive pain in the rear to line it up right in Kerbal!

In career mode that would be awesome.

In fact thinking about it, in sandbox mode it would still be pretty cool. Research new technologies to build new and better stuff instead of having every part available to you straight away.

That's the very reason it would suck. It's not sandbox to force people to work toward a given path. :p

Now i've caught up on the whole thread, its time to actually post in it, my god this is hard when you first start out! :D Bought it midweek, tried out some random designs, some good, some bad, most seem to barely make it into orbit, which is worrying for me! As for the above Laythe video, thats like witchcraft to me right now, haven't docked a thing, closest I have gotten to a landing it getting near to Minimus (Was told its the best place to start out!) and ended up out of fuel on the burn to Minimus, leaving myself about 300,000KM out and no way of getting back, thats 3 sad Kerbals right there!

I've followed a few of the basic tutorials, and I think I'm getting it bit by bit, but people seem to make taking off and getting a nice smooth 100K Orbit around Kerban to look as easy as standig up, most of my orbits there seem to be 100k one side, 460k the other, its rewarding when you manage to do anything, but my god it is hard!!

What even goes into those Nuclear tugs? Haven't seen any engines around that look like that on the back! :o

Lots to learn!!

Hello an welcome too KSP; Brave Kerbalnaught. :)

It's true; It is easier too get to Minimus, compared to the Mun.
True, it's further away (Distance wise) but, Minimus is smaller, with less gravitational pull, so requires significantly less energy (Fuel; Hence easier) too slow an land on it, when compared to the Mun.
Also with Minimus been smaller, its a much more forgiving satellite to bounce off under fast landings.

Tech Trees :( Please keep this game sandbox!

May I ask where you found that? On Reddit?
As a QA Engineer, even I haven't got that advanced build.. :o

Career will be for those that want a challenge, an the chance to develop the parts available too them.
Sandbox, will always have the latest available parts, open to the player at all times.

So adding career mode, is win win for every player. :D

I never bothered to check if things were lined up, I just used the mun to get me some sort of launch into the sun's orbit, then once the craft was in the sun's orbit I would set up a maneuver node to get a planet intercept. I think the worst case was having to wait ~800 days for a fuel efficient intercept like that :o

Can anyone point me in the right direction to adding Jeb back into my astronaut roster?

I landed Jeb's pod by the KSC but don't know what to do with him now. I thought there might be a way to get him back inside the Astronaut Complex but can't seem to find anyway to get him in?

Tracking Centre, select the vessel Jeb is in, then click the button that looks like a crane in bottom left of the screen (it says "recover" when mouse over it.) Provided it has landed, you'll be able to click it.

Thank's a lot, I've now got Jeb back to continue on with his space adventuring :D

Why cant they hurray upp and release 0.22, im getting a bit bored. I need the save sections of ships and the science stuff. Hopfully KOS mod will be updated to use the science info.

I've not played so much lately. I'm having issues setting goals for myself. I generally start building a rocket in space to go somewhere and end up with a space station instead.

Same here. I'm just getting the 'been there, done that' kind of feeling now that I've visited a few planets. Giving me an in game reason to do stuff would be very helpful for motivation. I would be very surprised if 0.22 came out in less than a few weeks because they haven't even announced that testing is happening yet and that normally takes a couple of weeks

Finally managed to get a Rover on to the Mun :)

After a controlled fall and some RCS its all systems go!

You may see mechjeb installed but for the purists out there, it was n't used. I tried it out to try and rendevous with a ship I have stuck in orbit for a rescue but it just kept flying me into the ground anyway!

I used this guide to carry out a manual trup and it worked great :)

Congrats.
Its a wonderful feeling landing on the Mun. But i am not one for rovers...
Your lander is slightly off. Legs are too short, an do you need the ASAS module?

As for 0.22.
QA Testing is ongoing, some of the new features are great.
Lots of more work is ongoing + server migration (Forum), so please be patient.
I wish I could share pictures, the new Space Centre looks great, as well as the other planned features.

The Rover was made partly because my 6 year old really wanted to drive on the Mun plus the challenge of getting it onto the surface itself was appealling. My lad sits with me and plays at times and absolutely loves it, learning while having fun, they should look at using this software in schools!

There are a few problems with the rocket that I will change for version 2, namely the legs ended up to short as you said and also the ladder is n't quite right which means the kerbals have to jump off the top of the rover to get back in the capsule! But it worked and thats the main thing, I'm happy with a successful landing :)

Not sure what you mean by the ASAS module, I'm still pretty new to this and always put a SAS module on my rockets, is there something I'm missing or could do differently?

Going to look at Minimus next, not sure about fuel requirements for that one, will have to watch some more youtube videos.

Congrats to the programmers though, to release a game like this is so refreshing and different from todays usual FPS genres we see released constantly.

Ahh. Welcome to the party then. You an your Kerbal addicted son. :D

You'll be glad too know, KSP has been used in some schools for almost 2 years. (Since as early as version 0.8)
Primarily I have read of teachers introducing KSP at there High Schools, throughout the world. Using Demo or Paid versions (Schools have bought Multiply license's as a teaching tool + remaining legal) an they have been used to teach Physics an about space exploration too kids.
Squad even has a strong partnership with NASA, I believe they have KSP running on computers at Kennedy Space Center. ;)

As for Minimus.
It's actually easier (Fuel wise) to reach it, compared too the Mun.
Minimus is a smaller satellite (Compared to the Mun), so it has less gravitational pull. Meaning, it takes about 5-10% more Delta V, to reach Mimimus's SOI (Sphere of Influence), but once there it takes much less Delta V too slow (Retro Burn) an achieve stable orbit, less fuel again (compared to the Mun) to safely land.
The only small issue with Minimus, is its SOI is much smaller, so harder to hit, an it's inclined slightly, so off angle by 5%... Good luck.

As for your lander:
The Battery + ASAS Module (Black/Grey part below battery) are not needed; So I'd recommend taking them out.
That command pod, has ASAS functionality + 50 units of battery storage build into it directly.
- Just some helpful suggestions, your welcome to play KSP as you see fit.
